The winning artists will now be featured on the Light Space & Time website for the month of February 2017 and thereafter, the artworks and links to the artist’s websites will remain online in the Light Space & Time Archives.

1st Place - Keith Kimmel - "New City, Too"

Keith Kimmel’s work spans a decade, showing his diverse style and expressive use of color, conveying a sense of splendor and richness that is immediately felt. His most recent pieces come out of two series of silkscreen prints created in collaboration with the master screen printer, Gary Lichtenstein.

Keith’s work ranges from abstract expressions of human and animal forms, city and landscapes to dream-like visions that incorporate whispered brushstrokes and geometric forms.

More important than the style of his paintings is the energy they express which stimulates a deep feeling of connection and grace.

2nd Place - Jeffrey Friedkin - "4th Street"

Jeffrey Friedkin is an award-winning and nationally exhibited photographer with a large online presence. Jeffrey was born in the Bronx and has lived in and around New York City for his life.

Jeffrey enjoys discovering slices of urban life in all of its gritty details and intense colors throughout the seasons. The lush rural landscapes and sparkling seascapes of the Hudson River Valley region equally inspire his photography.

Jeffrey employs a synthesis of the artistic eye and technology. His work focuses on New York life: the streets, people, architecture, and nature.

3rd Place - Tony De Luz - "M and M World"

I have pursued and painted an America that is disappearing as fast as I can paint it. The old neon signage on a bar or a motel, the architecture and graphic sensibilities of a time gone by, and the lightbulbs on a rickety old carnival ride have long held a fascination for me. It does take me back to a simpler time, a world full of possibilities, a time (at least for me) before youthful wonder gave way to adult responsibilities. Riding in the back of a station wagon, unseatbelted, to a drive-in movie. Listening to AM radio in the evening. A time when you couldn’t wait to see who was going to be on Ed Sullivan or you stopped everything to watch that favorite sitcom.

Whether or not things were better or worse back then is not part of the debate for me; undoubtedly things have changed societally, and mostly for the better. There is technology to make our lives better, microwaves to make our food cook faster. We can get anywhere in the world (and nearly anything) with our smartphones and computers.

The scenes I paint may bring you back to a time in your life you remember fondly. Or you may just enjoy the look of old style cars, signs and places. My hope is that you will have that feeling of comfort when you see the images, that they will remind you of home, wherever that may be for you. Or that you will appreciate my depiction of a slowing down of time.

4th Place - Imma Barrera - "Tribute in Light”

Imma is a Barcelona-born fine art photographer currently based in Metuchen NJ. She fell in love with photography when she got her first camera when she turned 8 and photography has always been an integral part of her life together with her passion to explore the world.

After completing her Biology degree in Barcelona, she moved to Switzerland and later to the US to pursue her scientific career. Photography was one of the tools she used to collect data for her research and her camera was with her wherever she went. In late 2015, she embarked in a career change and followed her passion for this form of art and joined the New York Institute of Photography to hone her skills and vision.

Imma identifies herself both as a scientist and an artist combining the analytical skills and scientific curiosity, her love of nature and the world around her, with the artistic sense of beauty and storytelling of photography.

She has won several awards for her fine art photography including the 2016 First Place Award given by the Edison Arts Society at the Arts on Amboy event in Edison NJ, and the 2016 People's Choice first place award at the Junebug ArtFest Window Gallery Competition in Metuchen NJ. In addition, she has had her photos displayed in several group and juried shows throughout New Jersey and in a solo exhibit “Magical Hours: From Dusk to Dawn” at Hopewell Valley Vineyards in Pennington.

Imma has traveled extensively and loves to capture the magic and colors of wildlife and nature, the mystery, and mysticism of a landscape, from sunset to sunrise, using long exposures and a variety of filters. She has been inspired by many photographers including Ansel Adams, Arthur Morris, Art Wolf and painters like Georgia O’Keeffe. In addition, she likes to collaborate with her peers in New Jersey and therefore runs a photography Meetup and a Facebook group.

Imma’s goals are bringing the art of photography to the public, creating compelling images that appeal to her own sense of beauty and aesthetics and to inspire in others a desire to explore the world and appreciate and value nature. Therefore, she has offered a series of free educational lectures at the public library in her town and various technical workshops.

5th Place – Suzanne Rempp - "Seattle Moods”

Suzanne Rempp is an artist living in Northern California. Suzanne’s current body of work represents everyday scenes in life in abstract form.

Suzanne begins each composition with a color palette or design in mind, she lets the color and design flow as the vision forms into shape. She favors the graceful lines of flora reflections as well as the geometric design of city skylines.

Suzanne combines the use of the palette knife, collage, mixed media and drawings to create compositions full of texture and color. Through all the layers of her art she celebrates the simplicity and complexity of everyday life that she hopes will touch your heartstrings.

6th Place - Peter Alessandria - "Chrysler 1"

Peter was born and raised in New York City and Long Island. After attending law school, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as an entertainment attorney. Today he is an award-winning, fine art, portrait and commercial photographer based in the New York City area.

Peter spent the first part of his work life as an entertainment and intellectual property attorney in Los Angeles. Working in the film and television industries sparked his own interest in creativity and in the early 2000’s he began experimenting with digital video and became an amateur filmmaker. But it wasn't until he picked up a digital SLR still camera for the first time in 2004 that his full creative passion for image-making came into being.

Like many people, things changed dramatically for Peter in 2008. That year, as a result of the Global Financial Crisis, he lost his law practice. In the days and weeks that followed he struggled with the question of what to do with the rest of his life. It was only after much deliberation that he decided to follow his passion for photography, and in late 2009, he began pursuing photography full-time.

As a fine art photographer, Peter has created numerous collections of landscape, seascape, cityscape and still life images. His work has been featured in dozens of solo and group photography and art exhibitions. He has won forty-two (42) awards in the past few years and his photos have been published nationally and internationally, as well as being shown on television and in feature films. He has been the subject of several newspaper, radio, Internet and television interviews.

Peter finds inspiration mostly in the work of other photographers - and not necessarily the famous ones. Rather, it is his peers, many of whom he connects with on social media, that inspire Peter to go out and try new things or shoot in new locations. This connecting with others has helped fuel his creativity greatly over the last several years.

As both a photographer and filmmaker Peter’s intent is simple: create compelling images that appeal to his own sense of beauty and aesthetics. His goal is to use his art - and his life - to inspire others. He shares his photos in the hopes of touching people’s hearts and minds in positive and uplifting ways.

7th Place - Raymond Piskule - "Eddie Bauer"

Raymond has art in his blood and soul since he was old enough to wield a pencil or crayon. At the age of four, he rendered his first realistic image of an urban street scene from his own neighborhood.

During his adult working years, he was the owner of a commercial sign and design studio which included the creation and execution of large-scale residential murals and commercial pictorials. During that time Raymond did not allow his work schedule from interfering from his personal painting. He took advantage of every free moment to tend to his calling. It was a time when he created some of his best works.

Now retired, Raymond has dedicated himself to painting full-time. He works in both acrylics and oils.

The artist does not believe in tooting one's horn, nor does he put a lot of weight on degrees or self-proclaimed "experts." He paints, not for commercial gain, but because something inside him drives him in the direction that he follows. He maintains that art is subjective and it either speaks to the individual viewer or it doesn't. It should not have to be explained.

8th Place - Catherine King - "Cityscape Clouds"

Catherine King is an American digital artist and photographer artist based in Northern Nevada and California. She strives to tell stories through decorative, historical, and inspirational artwork.

Her goal is to engage her viewer’s imaginations, getting them to linger a little longer picking out a detail or a story in one of her pieces. Stories, histories, fantasies from childhood, over-the-top cinema, art history, literature, and music with clever lyrics are all her inspirations. Second only to creating art, she is inspired by her travels around the world. In her imaginative and aware world, the smallest thing may trigger what she calls her overactive imagination. Each piece is ultimately true to the courageous and tenacious woman she strives to be; true to her lives journey.

9th Place - Nicole Korbe - “UrbanUs #1"

Nicole Korbe grew up in the desert of New Mexico and then the plains of Oklahoma. For the last decade and a half, she focused largely on creating a stable existence as she nurtured a successful career. In early 2016, she became restless and began painting just to see if she could create something she considered adequate for her own walls. She recognized with excitement that the feisty creative self cannot be kept down forever. She found that she couldn’t stop and was encouraged to pursue painting as something more than a hobby.

Nicole’s inspirations come from her equal love of both natural and urban environs. To date, she is self-taught and largely uses acrylics or oils with a cold wax medium. She looks forward to participating in many classes to strengthen her skills and to experiment with other media.

Nicole resides in Denver, Colorado with her husband and a terrific mutt of a dog. Having left her 9-5 job in December of 2016, she has taken the leap to a focused pursuit of creative happiness and well-being.

10th Place - Eliza McNally - "Footbridge in the Snow"

Shooting 35mm photographs with a borrowed Nikon F analog camera, during a trip to France at age 17, photography became a thrill for Eliza that surpassed, by far, previous forms of two dimensional experimentation.

Battling learning disabilities, and graduating from Fordham University in 1986 with a degree in Humanities, Studio art and Photography, Eliza went on to study drawing periodically at the Art Students League in New York City. The process of making art was key to the recognition, interpretation and expression of form and content in the physical world. Getting a camera in hand once again was a joyful way to connect with the world around her.

Feeling liberated from the boundaries of making traditional art, the capturing of light, form, mood, texture and emotion through the camera lens became the means to finding a deep and lasting passion. The darkroom was always a magical place where subjects that came to light in the developing tray brought focused attention to these worldly elements, anticipating a bond with viewers through the sharing of black and white images. 

The immediacy and versatility of digital photography has introduced a new dimension to Eliza’s work. A limitless platform of possibility has opened up through the spontaneity of digital technology. With the addition of color to her work, she shares her visual truths by using the camera as an editing tool as well as a vessel for representation.

Her slow and thoughtful observation combined with the speed of digital editing presents a rich opportunity for story-telling, unlike the guesswork involved with the film medium. Her goal is to reveal the richness of everyday life; to point out the beauty found in the simplest of objects and settings, and the importance of the common individual.

Always pushing to gain further discovery and new experiences in the digital universe, Eliza has embarked upon a rich and satisfying journey in the world of fine art. Amid the clamor of twenty first century expression and celebrity culture, it is her hope that her images will find their way to her audience in a quiet, lasting and meaningful manner.
