The winning artists will now be featured on the Light Space & Time website for the month of October 2018 and thereafter, the artworks and links to the artist’s websites will remain online in the Light Space & Time Archives.
The overall winning artists’ category of the "Patterns" Art Exhibition will receive extensive worldwide publicity and promotion. In addition, the overall winning artists will also receive extensive worldwide publicity in the form of email marketing, 550+ press release announcements, event announcement posts, and social media marketing.

1st Place - Cynthia Coldren - "Seven By Two"
As an artist, Cynthia Coldren uses a non-objective abstract style to visually explore opposing concepts and rethink how we react to them — chaos and order, complexity and simplicity, repetition and diversity. She finds inspiration in strong visuals of spare landscapes, urban structures and geographic patterns that become understories for her abstract “ideascapes.”
With a creative process that’s both intentional and spontaneous, Cynthia frequently pairs geometric shapes with color and textural abstraction. Her use of squares, lines and gridded patterns is a unifying thread through her art that creates a sense of familiarity in the abstract.
Cynthia studied fine art as an undergraduate student before completing her BAS in communications and management. Largely self-taught, her early artwork focused on photo-realistic pastel paintings. In the last 10 years, she transitioned to an abstract style using acrylics paints, inks and mediums on canvas and paper. She lives in the Dallas, Texas Motorplex. 2nd Place – Brigitte Wiltzer - "Dear Grass"
Brigitte Wiltzer is a photographer whose love affair with the camera began while attending Arizona State University in the 1970s. After moving to Los Angeles she began working for ABC Television Network as a still photographer. After noticing an absence of good quality food on her shoots she offered to cater for them and became caterer to the stars, and later opened a restaurant in Prescott, Arizona. The digital revolution had begun when she returned to photography.
Wiltzer deconstructs architecture within the photographic frame. Her images are bold interpretations that emphasize line, negative space and the flattening of the three-dimensional space. Her approach is to try to look at things differently, looking for dynamic elements hidden in plain sight.
Brigitte Wiltzer has exhibited at the Arizona State University’s prestigious Gammage Auditorium, as well as receiving numerous awards from Light Space & Time Gallery in 2011. 3rd Place – Dorothy McGuinness - "Triality 3"
After 31 years of exploring the woven form, I have mastered the art of diagonal twill, with which I create forms and structures not normally found in the basketry world. My medium for this unique work is watercolor paper, which I’ve painted and cut into very narrow uniform strips to achieve the precision I seek.
Approaching my work as a puzzle drives me to discover new shapes and weaving innovations. I often think, “How will it work out if I try this, or how can I get this shape or pattern combination? What if I use these colors in this combination in this order? What if…”
I am also very much interested in the math and geometric constraints of the work. Using hundreds of strips of paper at a time, I explore new structural forms: multiple woven units, asymmetrical corners, weaving opposite corners together, multiple-stepped corners in tandem that add structure to the work. This creates a singular look to the pieces, building unique and intriguing forms that are encoded with energy and elegance.
I am intrigued by the potential outcome of any new design. The evolution of my body of work is built on taking risks, and avoiding the “known”. The risks offer challenges, which often lead to new directions. This is the excitement that keeps me working in a repetitive medium: it is an on-going meditation on improvisation, a continual experiment through which my work can progress and develop. 4th Place - Marti White - "Escena IV"
Marti White is a mixed media artist from Tucson, Arizona. Her work is exhibited nationally and locally. Marti works in watercolor, acrylic, collage, and mixed media. She enjoys sharing what she has learned with others and teaches small groups in her home studio or in mini-workshops in the community. She is a Signature member of the Contemporary Artists of Southern Arizona (CASA) which she served as president for six years, a Signature Member of the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild (SAWG) which she serves as Vice President of Shows, a Signature Member of the International Society of Acrylic Painters (ISaP), an Associate of The Drawing Studio (TDS), and a member of Acrylic Painters USA (AP-USA). Marti’s work is an expression of her inner self. She seldom plans her work but lets it evolve. Her work is sometimes representational, but most often abstract.
Marti was born and raised in Stillwater, Oklahoma where she attended Oklahoma State University. After a few years in Arizona where her husband completed his doctorate degree, she moved to the Twin Cities, MN. She began to paint in earnest while living in the Midwest. She began in oil and soon became drawn to the immediacy of watercolor. Marti’s family loved the North Shore of Lake Superior and her work often reflects her love of that very special place.
Almost twenty years ago, her husband retired and they returned to Arizona. This whole new way of life and the climate and intense colors drew her to begin painting in mixed media, collage, and acrylic. These mediums didn’t dry so quickly and the colors she used became intense and exciting. Her fascination with what is under the surface of a painting led her to a continuing series of paintings called “Apertures.” She finds windows and doors into a painting that inform a personal story to the viewer which is what she is after.

5th Place – James Stasiak - "A Matter of Perspective"
Jim Stasiak of New Milford, CT, is a photographer, musician, and graphic arts pro. Jim began shooting film and printing in 1965 and moved to digital in 2002. He continues to evolve and refine his photographic and printing skills. He studied photography at Pratt Institute.
Jim has given workshops in fine art digital printing at the New England Photographic Workshop and Northern Exposures. Jim's photographs have been exhibited at The Carriage Barn Arts Center (New Canaan), The Mattatuck Museum (Waterbury), Silvermine Guild Art Center (New Canaan), White Silo Winery (Sherman), Miranda WInery (Goshen), the Atrium at the Warner Theatre (Torrington), Artwell Gallery (Torrington), New England School of Photographic Arts (New Milford), and Northern Exposures Gallery (Kent).
All of Jim's work begins with a photograph, capturing the physical energies of light, color, dimension and time. Some remain unaltered, printed within traditional and contemporary photographic standards. Others are processed and constructed in the digital realm to reveal the meditative and metaphysical energies which he sees and feels.
Jim's work is meant to capture a viewer's attention and promote a meditative atmosphere where imagination, emotion, and the reaction may be facilitated. 6th Place - Paula Weech - "Echo de Lavande"
Paula has always been drawn to creativity. She lived her early years in Niagara Falls where, in third grade, her artwork was displayed in a children’s show at the local art museum. She later moved on to Illinois where she attended junior and senior high schools during the 1960s. At that time, girls were required to choose between home economics and art. Paula chose the latter. Yet what she learned in those early years of art classes does not resonate in her artwork of today. Her love of abstract became evident, many years after her high school graduation.
Paula was married at age 17, right after high school and did not go on to college. After marrying young and immersing herself in raising three children, her artistic talents lay dormant. She worked in the fields of banking and accounting in the Midwest until 1986. It was then that Paula and her family relocated to Tucson, Arizona where she launched her twenty-three-year career as Director of Operations for a national advertising research company. Such a career path was a far cry from that of an artist, but she maintained her appreciation and love for art, and a strong desire to express herself artistically.
In the late 1980s, through a serendipitous encounter, Paula met a gentleman who taught “meditation painting.” She took a private class from him and realized the act of dripping and throwing the paint onto large canvases was a very liberating experience and began painting occasionally on the weekends to relax and unwind. Eventually, she began to experiment with a variety of papers as her base rather than the large canvases with which she began her artistic journey. Her acrylics took on a new life atop fibrous watercolor papers, rice papers, metallic and high gloss paper.
Paula is primarily a self-taught artist; however, she continues educating herself in a variety of art mediums and styles, enrolling in various workshops. Her recent exploration of pouring watercolor on yupo and creating with collage has become her new passion. As with the large canvas paintings, she continues to paint abstractly allowing her mood, the colors and the flow of the paint to guide her. Pouring on yupo is challenging but invigorating. It encourages her to let go of control and allow the paint to merge and flow. Her colors are rarely chosen before the start of a painting, as she allows her prevailing mood to dictate her palette. Paula doesn’t set out to paint about one subject or another. She enjoys painting abstractly because it is exciting to watch the painting evolve. Painting with abandon uplifts her soul and spirit.
Paula started painting more seriously a few years ago, after retiring from her career. She is a member of Arizona Watercolor Society, Contemporary Artists Southern Arizona, National Collage Society, and is a signature member of the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild. 7th Place - Peggy Jones Pfister - "Corrugated II"
Peggy Jones Pfister is a photographer and digital artist based in Houston, Texas. A native of Houston, she grew up in cities on the Texas Gulf Coast. She majored in Mathematics Education at the University of Houston. Although certified to teach Math and Spanish in secondary schools, Peggy became a retirement plans consultant and administrator, specializing in traditional pension plans and 401(k) plans. She earned the Certified Employee Benefits Specialist designation (CEBS), jointly sponsored by the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.
Beginning with winning a coloring contest at age six, Peggy has always enjoyed creative outlets in her spare time throughout her life, and now full-time. She has especially enjoyed needle and fabric arts, photography, and digital art. She has taken several online photography courses and otherwise is largely a self-taught artist. She loves researching and problem solving, two of the most critical elements of continual learning in any endeavor.
Peggy’s photographic interests include plants, architecture, abstracts, and macros. She is especially drawn to color, line, pattern, repetition, and other graphic elements, and enjoys showcasing those elements in the captured image, as well as highlighting them via post-processing enhancements. She has recently begun to create digital art by arranging images from her archives into abstract mosaics.
Peggy has enjoyed success in several online photography contests including BetterPhoto.com, Imaging-Resouce.com, MotifCollective.com, and LightSpaceTime.art. Her work has been exhibited in group shows at Hardy & Nance Studios, JoMar Visions, and the Lawndale Art Center in Houston, and at 1650 Gallery in Los Angeles. 8th Place - Jeanne Rhea - "The Dance of Life"
Jeanne Rhea has been involved in the arts her entire life and was a founding member of an arts cooperative in Anchorage, AK. She is the founder of the Carolina Mixed Media Art Guild now in its seventeenth year.
Rhea is inspired by nature, colors, patterns, fractals, photomicrography, life experiences, and the creative process itself. Using a variety of inks, she creates effects that are reminiscent of microorganisms, crystalline structures, mudflats, terraced earth, the cosmos, sea life, flowers, surrealistic landscapes, and more. These patterns and designs are dependent on many factors including the humidity, the temperature, the chemical and physical makeup of the inks, the viscosity of the inks, and the porosity of the substrate. Working wet on wet, in many ways, art meets science.
Her studio is where techniques are discovered, experiments are performed, problems are solved, art is shared, friends are made, and where self-discovery and magic happen. One could say her studio is part science lab, theater, sanctuary, therapist’s office, classroom, dance and music hall, her playground, and kingdom. The only thing her studio is not is a factory. She creates a lot of art, but it is all unique and cannot be reproduced. Even with her wide range of art techniques, her signature style is obvious.
No prints are made of her paintings. They have a multi-dimensional quality. They capture the imagination and command attention with their unique patterns, designs, and vibrancy.

9th Place - Eleni Gemeni - "Les Baguettes"
Eleni Gemeni works as a freelance linguist researcher and artist, based in Luxembourg. Throughout her academic career, she had pursued fields of study and ideas that have interested her. She studied economics, art & interior design and translation & applied linguistics.
Her abiding love in art and science is manifested in her artworks. She dedicated her free time to exploring cosmos, time, life, nature and everything in between. This is also the journey revealed in her art. Painting, collage, digital art, photography are her tools. Emotions, humor, drama, whimsy, mischief, surrealism, allegory and visionary thinking are her ingredients for her creative artworks.

10th Place - Nell-Lynn Perera - "Underwater"
Nell-Lynn Perera was born in Malaysia but she has traveled to a good number of places in the world and spent most of her adult life living abroad. It is no secret that she was born different. As a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), she has always had a sharp sense of awareness and knowing.
Self-taught, she refuses to rely on talent alone as much as she refuses to indulge her senses in the work of others. Hence, she preserves her calling to paint as best as she can without the influences of other artists. She lives by one motto: If you are going to do something, be good at it.
