The Overall Winning Artists Category consists of the 10 Best Entries received from the 3 media categories of the Painting & Other Category, Photography & Digital Category and the 3 Dimensional Art categories. 

The winning artists will now be featured on the Light Space & Time website for the month of March 2020 and thereafter, the artworks and links to the artist’s websites will remain online in the Light Space & Time Archives.

The overall winning artists’ category of the 11th Annual "Abstracts" Art Exhibition will receive extensive worldwide publicity and promotion.  In addition, the overall winning artists will also receive extensive worldwide publicity in the form of email marketing, 550+ press release announcements, event announcement posts and social media marketing. 

Winning artists will also have their art exhibition results posted and promoted on ArtJobs/ArtWeek. Artweek/Artjobs produces 800,000 page impressions per month, 280,000 website visitors per month and has 30,000 newsletter subscribers.

1st Place – Richard Mittelstadt - “Mysterious”

Having taught high school art with a Masters degree for 38 years, Rick has an extensive background in art history, materials, concepts, and processes. While working on his college degrees in art education and studio art, he focused on drawing, printmaking, and jewelry making. While teaching high school art education, he concentrated on landscape watercolor painting. After retiring, he turned his attention to acrylic painting.

Rick thinks of his artwork as a theatrical production in which the viewer is allowed to temporarily suspend disbelief. For the viewer, his artwork becomes a momentary distraction—a gift of enchantment, amusement and emotional connection.

Rick has been honored with several one-person exhibitions in galleries and public venues as well as numerous awards in juried exhibitions for his acrylic paintings in the past several years.

2nd Place – Jyl Blackwell - “Allure”

Jyl Blackwell is an internationally awarded artist and has shown her work in many exhibits in the United States. Her most recent digital paintings can be seen in galleries and exhibits in the Seattle area.

Jyl's art sprang from a love of science and technology. It wasn’t until recent advances in software that she was able to form art and science into a process called Kinetic Flow Painting™. Kinetic is defined as relating to or resulting from motion. (of a work of art) depending on movement for its effect. And that movement is created by the flow of the pixels. Swirling layers of gradient pixels are put into motion on the digital canvas. Often inspired by nature, dance and the human form, Jyl bring the abstract to real-life experiences and observations.

An award winning and published artist, Jyl Blackwell has been creating art and music since her childhood. She has early beginnings as a pencil and charcoal artist as well as dabbling in pastels and watercolor. When she wasn’t creating works of art, she was singing and dancing on stage.

Using various software, she combines the best attributes of each to lay down riffs of color and curve, form and light – music for the eyes!

3rd Place – Vladimir Luna - “Oh Immortal Bull, our Beheaded”

Vladimir consider himself as an eclectic and self-taught artist in the sense that he does not have a formal academic education. As for the techniques that he has developed and adopted are the result of participating in various free workshops with figurative and abstract painters, but above all, the exercise of trial and error. The concept or themes of his paintings are mostly literary, addressing philosophical, historical, mythological, etc., often with a focus on questioning the human condition. He tries to make the relationship with his works as minimal as possible to achieve objectivity in the idea that he wants to capture, although he is aware beforehand that this break is impossible, this utopia serves as a reference and starting point in the exercise of Vladimir's attempt to do art. This requirement demands different technique, material and modus operandi resources in each work. Vladimir considers that any material can be used if the conceptual approach is adequate and if it fulfills its aesthetic function, with the condition that it is not perishable and does not corrupt the work partially or totally.

4th Place – Jim Stasiak - “The Lure of Curves”

As a visual artist, I use photography to record a moment in time. The translation of that moment into a meaningful image displays my intent to capture the viewer’s imagination and curiosity, expand the viewer’s perception, and evoke an emotional response. I photograph natural and man-made designs, color, light, dimension and time, and create images from my photos in a directed meditative process that I call Improvisational Development. My prints can be literal translations of the captured moment, or become the foundation for images and feelings contained within that moment. Much as seeing a print develop in a tray of chemicals has always been magical for me, there is a similar thrill of discovery in finding and developing an image hidden in a photograph, and seeing it come to life in my digital darkroom. Being able to print these images and share them with the rest of the world is its own reward. 

Every aspect of digital photography from capture to editing to reproduction is based on equations which determine how form, geometry and color interact. My work uses these interactions as creative tools to construct and evolve images to communicate my process and imagination. My intuition and improvisational skills provide direction, and both respond well to happy surprises.

An award-winning photographic artist, musician and printing arts professional living in the Northwest Corner of CT, using film since 1965, and digital since 1995, Jim's photography spans documentary, creative, travel and constructed imaging. Jim is experienced in professional retouching and image optimization for the fashion, music and publishing industries. He and his wife operate Nu Pica Design, their creative arts firm, and appear with their band Hummingbird throughout northwest Connecticut.

Jim regularly exhibits at Carriage Barn Arts Center (New Canaan), Washington Art Association (Washington), Sherman Library (Sherman), White Silo Farm (Sherman), Miranda Vineyard (Goshen) and The Atrium Gallery, Warner Theatre (Torrington). His work is in the permanent collection of Danbury Hospital, CT, and private collections in NY, CT, NH and ME.

He studied photography and journalism at Pratt Institute; music and creative writing at City College of New York; electronic music composition at Manhattan School of Music; and platinum photo printing with Tillman Crane.

5th Place – Lily Boukouvala - “Edute”

Lily Boukouvala studied photography and graphic design in Athens, Greece. In fact, landscape photography attracts her more, as she strongly believes that the contact with nature aims to a powerful process that serves the development and the sensitization of the human soul. However, abstract images do not leave her indifferent.

"Expressive and symbolic association of colour, the role of the lines and the spots, the adaptation to each other on the photographic surface". She takes into account all these looking for the most appropriate way to express the "internal necessity". In this context the object is lost by the intention of going beyond of the traditional perception of reality.

Lily was selected for three group photography exhibitions in Athens and for CIP festival in Chania Crete, as well.

6th Place – Carla Wormington - “Moon Shadow”

Carla is an abstract artist living in Southwest Florida. She grew up under the influence of her artistic mother and finally took her art seriously in high school, where she experimented with different mediums. In college, she continued her studies in the arts and was introduced to abstract. She found a new sense of intuitive freedom in abstract painting and an excitement she never experienced before.

Carla continued to experiment with new techniques, and her love of bright colors and deep impasto texture have now become part of her trademark. Her work is very intuitive, and she doesn't envision what she is going to paint, but lets the feeling flow naturally from her brush to the canvas. Carla has also started creating more with mixed media, claiming that there is a whole new world to explore in this medium. She continues to incorporate her use of bright colors into her work, and provide texture, which is consistent with her style.

Carla is a member of her local art association. She has a regular following of fans on social media and loves interacting with them. You can find her most days in her art studio creating something new. She continues to experiment with new styles, textures and colors to find that “very unique, Je Ne Sais Quoi.”

7th Place – Merritt Richardson - “Discovery”

Merritt Richardson has always found expression and fun in creating. Using acrylic paints and mixed media on canvas, her art is focused on bold abstracts and representational landscapes.

A self-taught artist, Merritt's approach to painting is mostly intuitive, letting the paint and tools guide the composition and details as she goes. Paint, react, paint…until each piece tells her that it is complete. She strives to create an interplay of colors, textures, and space resulting in energy, movement, contrast, and balance in each piece. She is inspired by studying other artists’ techniques across all forms of art as well as nature, architecture and other design.

Her hope is that her art brings delight and joy to those who see it. Her goal is to create work that engages viewers and asks them to formulate their own interpretation of what is represented on the canvas. The entire process of creating gives her energy and sharpens her view of the world around her. When that leads to making something that is seen as beautiful or intriguing or captivating, she is a happy artist.

8th Place – Francene Levinson - “Pressure”

Francene J. Levinson was born in Brooklyn, N. Y. where she received her BA 1966 and MA Art Ed 1969 at Brooklyn College, NY. Her abstract paintings were influenced by her professor Ad Reinhardt and his contemporary, Mark Rothko.

Francene’s computer drawing skills were acquired at the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Her career includes 15 years as an award-winning art teacher in New York and Florida. The modular paper sculptures she created have been juried into many national gallery and museum exhibitions.

Francene’s sculptures have earned many first place and best in show awards. In addition, she was honored with “The Mastermind Art Grant” for South Florida 2010. Significantly, she was also awarded First Place – Boca Raton Museum of Art, 2010 - Biennial, in Boca Raton, FL

Now, coming full circle back to her painting and computer skills, Francene creates original abstract digital paintings. Her digital paintings have been published in Woventale Press Literary Arts Magazine and Salann Magazine.

In 2019, She represented the USA, where the Art Dex International Competition awarded her digital painting 4th place among 88 countries. She exhibits her digital art at several galleries in Portland, Oregon and is represented by the Portland Art Museum’s RSG Gallery.

Francene enjoys pushing the digital art medium to its full potential. She currently resides in Portland, Oregon.

9th Place – Diana Fernández - “Triad”

It is for me to recognize what can be unearthed: to reveal what magnificence of light and colors of form discover the sensuality that lies within. With a courage gained through experience, I can break into these alabaster stones, revealing their secrets subdued, cloaked in the dusts of our Planet evolution, which is why I love stone sculpture. And my bronze sculptures are also a summary for the concept of art responsibility because are very durable, able to withstand the elements for many years when properly prepared. Finally, the ability to use corrosive materials to create a patina allows to create a vibrant coating, because bronze is an incredibly important historical art medium for sustainable sculpture. To develop cosmic visions in fiberglass, is to create new visions of outer space with inner material, that is why in fiberglass I developed Red Moons and many other possibilities and much more that sculpturally merge with color and shape in a different way of my other sculptures in alabaster and bronze, which also represent the universal experiences that surround us.

10th Place – Sophia Beccue - “Wine Country”

Sophia was born in Taiwan and lives in Santa Barbara, California, a city rich with art, culture and natural beauty. She studied Graphic Design as an undergraduate and then Illustration at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. Her professional experience includes positions at an advertising agency, a film company, and as a freelance artist. She is a member of the Santa Barbara Art Association and the Abstract Art Collective. She has won numerous awards and has solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums. Her art has been collected internationally.

Artist Statement

Simplicity has always attracted Sophia, even as a young girl. She strives to capture her subject matter with simplicity through shapes, colors, marks, form, and composition. She is especially drawn to abstract art with rich colors and creative arrangements. Her abstractions come from a firm foundation of solid classical training in realism. Pairing down a subject matter to its essence is always a challenge she embraces. Capturing the inner world is as intriguing to her as rendering the physical world. Her love of travel has taken her to more than 50 countries which greatly enriches her understanding of the world and enhances the depth of her art. Her primary mediums are acrylic and watercolor. As an artist, she believes that God has imparted this gift in her. She wants her creativity and artwork to reflect and honor the Creator of the creatives. While making art brings her joy and pleasure, her ambition is to create art that conveys beauty, grace, truth, and contributes toward an uplifting spirit in viewers.
