The winning artists will now be featured on the Light Space & Time website for the month of January 2016 and thereafter, the artworks and links to the artist’s websites will remain online in the Light Space & Time Archives.

1st Place - Branka Grubić  - "Just Breathe"

Branka Grubić grew up in Šibenik, Croatia in the 1980’s. Her painting began as a teenager, but her career did not really begin until her early-30s. Branka’s paintings are contemporary and have a universal appeal to men and women of all cultures. The work consists of layers of paint and imagery that exude to energy and life. The viewer is drawn into a world filled with movement, a signature style illustrating Branka’s ability to juxtapose abstract mixed media with the feminine figure.

Charity is also a high priority for artist Branka Grubić. She donated her art to several charitable events and causes.

Continuous positive reception of Branka’s work is also evident in corporate settings with many leading organizations. Critics have said, “Similar to her pop art predecessors, Branka’s brightly colored abstracts and photo-paintings do not demand anything from us. They reflect ourselves back to us. 2nd Place - Nina Chung - "Redemption"

Nina Chung is an artist and fine art photographer based in Brooklyn, New York. Nina’s and highly suggestive imagery focuses on the emotional and psychological conflict arising from the interplay of challenging landscapes and their inhabitants.

Her work emphasizes the origin and transference of atmospheric power between nature and the human psyche as perceived on an intuitive level. She specializes in capturing moments of animality in human subjects and breathing emotional complexity into natural phenomena. Ms. Chung employs a range of techniques to enhance the dramatic quality of her work, including photo composite layers, chiaroscuro lighting techniques, and various cinematic effects. The diversity of her methods and clarity of her vision imbue her work with a richness of texture and tactile impact that spans a remarkable range of energy and emotion.

Ms. Chung was born in Seoul in 1969 and raised in the Brooklyn. She received her BFA at the School of Visual Arts in 1993 and began her artistic career experimenting with variety of mediums, including silkscreen, etching, collage, and silver pointe, before concentrating on photography.

Her distinct style is the product of her rich background in classical painting, art history, kinesiology, and deep interest in Jungian psychology. Chung mentors young inner city children in Brooklyn during her free time. Her most recent project "Skin and Stone" explores some of the least accessible reaches of the Icelandic terrain and their impact on the human psyche.   http://www.alchemyofspirit.net

3rd Place – Marguerite Hogue - "Trust Positions"

Marguerite Hogue is interested in exploring the relationship between objects and memory. Household items that she selects such as pillowcases and furniture hold the indication of human use through wear. Industrial materials are also used to alter both appearance and functionality. In many works, the objects have been covered in clay slip, fired, and then forcefully fragmented apart.

Marguerite describes the creative process, “The ceramic pieces are bound tightly, continuing to break as they press together in positions of tension. Thread and rubber bands are used to bind and support creating a limited permanence of arrangement and form. This process gives deteriorating objects permanence much like objects serve as more lasting placeholders for memories. In other pieces the slip is left unfired to heighten and accelerate decay also referencing memory. My work seeks to explore the sentimentality of inanimate objects and their temporal connection to memory and identity through alteration and decay.”  http://www.margueritehogue.com

4th Place - Paula Montgomery - "Osprey at Yellowstone" 

Lively, effervescent color rhythmically pulsates through the paintings of American artist Paula Montgomery. Beginning each composition with a particular hue or design, Montgomery then lets her materials and concept guide her process as she produces breathtakingly exquisite canvases.

Primarily focusing on flora as a subject, Montgomery passionately transforms everyday flowers into painterly visual poems. Utilizing either a lithe, expressionistic brushstroke or a purposeful palette knife, the artist boldly applies paints with a poetic flourish. Unwilling to limit herself to traditional materials alone, Montgomery embraces mixed media techniques and materials in order to accumulate the abstract quality of her works. Thus the paintings hover gracefully between abstraction and representation. Elegant and independent, these paintings exude a sense of peace and joy.

5th Place - Susan Paradise-Burke - "Infinity"

Susan Paradise-Burke is a fine art and real estate photographer who lives on Cape Cod. She is known for photographing nature and outdoor imagery. Susan looks for images which most people would just pass by. In doing so, she turns the ordinary into something worth holding on to.

Susan's photographs express her love of nature, color, and the world around her. She invites the viewer to create their own interpretation and feeling from every picture she takes. Her continuing development as a photographer is the result of her artistic curiosity, self-study, and her travels.

6th Place - Robyn Ansell - "Nonjabulo"

Robyn Ansell was born on May 1988 in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. She loved doing creative things from early childhood; growing up with artistic parents she was always encouraged to indulge her creative side. At the same time she has spent as much time as possible doing any activity related to wildlife and/or conservation.

Robyn discovered oils as a medium in her late teens and has never looked back. Being inspired by anything that has an African feel to it she gets great satisfaction from painting portraits and wildlife.

Robyn has been fortunate enough to spend a great deal of time living and working in the bush which has enhanced her understanding and appreciation for the detail, colour and natural perfection which exists quietly and effortlessly in any part of land which is truly wild and without the influence of interference of humanity.

After matriculating in 2006 Robyn had the incredible opportunity to live and work in Botswana’s Tuli Block, which fuelled her ever-flourishing passion for the wilderness at full force. She has since completed her FGASA (field guide training course) and aside from visiting Tuli as often as opportunity allowed (her brushes, paints and canvases have made many trips back and forth across the Limpopo river) she spent 2011 and 2012 working in Nambiti Private Game Reserve working as a guide and hostess before returning home to pursue painting full time.

Robyn believes that working in the bush has been mutually beneficial to all aspects of her character, she consider herself very fortunate to have been able to live a lifestyle that is complimentary to the many different interests she has, a lifestyle where her passion for music and painting fit right in. Most importantly the industry afforded her the opportunity to meet a great variety of people who have guided and encouraged her to pursue her artistic ventures.

Robyn finds simple effortless perfection in the true spirit of untouched Africa and the plants, animals, colours and textures of which it consists. To sit quietly and attempt to recreate this on canvas is for her truly exciting and fulfilling-Robyn attempts to capture realism in her work, looking at a scene and focusing on emulating colours and textures through various brush techniques she has developed and/or adapted to suit her particular style.

7th Place - Danielle Austen - "Whisper"

Danielle Austen is an award-winning fine art photographer specializing in intimate portraits of the environment. She was trained in the traditional fine arts of painting, sculpture, drawing and photography where she received her BFA from Cornell University. She worked as a graphic designer before attending the master’s program at the Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, in photojournalism.

Working for newspapers and magazines, her editorial work has been published locally, regionally and nationally, including “Life’s, The Year in Pictures.” Returning to her fine art roots, she has combined her skills and training and has participated in over three dozen national juried exhibits, two joint shows and two solo exhibits. She was recently selected to have a

Solo exhibit as part of the “NJ Emerging Artist Series” at the Monmouth Museum in March 2016.

This year she was the Artist-in-Residence at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and returned for a second time to Acadia National Park this past fall. She previously did other residencies at the Everglades National Park and the Vermont Studio Center where she received a full fellowship.

Danielle has won many awards, both in her photojournalism and fine art work. In 2013, Danielle was a national winner of Canon’s “Project Imaginat10n” photo competition with Director Ron Howard. Celebrity director, Biz Stone, the co-founder of Twitter, chose her winning image to help inspire his short film, “Evermore” which premiered October 2013 in NYC.

“It is easy to get lost in the beauty of the majestic vistas, but I believe it is the elements that make up these scenes are of the greatest value. My nature photography reflects a desire to capture and record the many tranquil aspects of my journeys that are often missed by the casual observer. 8th Place - Sally Tuttle - "Fragments Series 05b"

Sally Tuttle is an artist living and working in the Monterey area of California. Sally’s current body of work represents her work with non-objective painting and combined media collage, using fragments of drawings and hand painted papers to create compositions she loves the accidental building nature of this type of work.

Sally considers her current work to be influenced by her admiration of the American Abstraction Expressionists from the 1950’s. Sally received her BA in interior design with a focus on furniture design from Cornish Institute in Seattle. Soon after graduation Sally started painting and continued painting off and on while working with clients on various interior design projects. During these years, painting was done “as time permits” and Sally discovered that if you paint when time permits sometimes you do not paint at all.

9th Place - Jennifer Bongiorno - "Boat Under the Milky Way"

Jennifer C. Bongiorno has been a professional photographer for more than 17 years. It all began in the 1980’s with her beloved first camera, a Kodak Fisher Price. Over the past two decades, Jennifer has photographed everything from weddings, portraits to government ceremonies and landscape photography.

Jennifer graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Visual Arts from Mercer County Community College in 1997. From 2000 to 2005, she worked as the official photographer and Director of Photography for the New Jersey governor’s office. In her role there, she photographed press conferences, official and private events.

Today, Jennifer continues her photographic journey capturing timeless landscapes using her Nikon D810 camera. With her eye for detail, composition and natural lighting, Jennifer’s love of children, nature and photography shines through the camera. Jennifer won Honorable Mention from the International Photography Awards and Second Place from the Burlington County Juried Photography Competition for her Waterford piece. She is currently a member of the South Jersey Camera Club.

10th Place - JoAnn Shelby - "After the Storm"  

A lifelong passion to create drives JoAnn Shelby to explore many types of medium. JoAnn was classically trained as fine art major at Michigan State University.

She works in fiber, oils, watercolor and currently uses alcohol ink in fine detailed paintings. She lives near the shores of Lake Superior using all the nature that surrounds for subject matter.
