The Overall Winning Artists Category consists of the 10 Best Entries received from the 3 media categories of the Painting & Other Category, Photography & Digital Category and the 3 Dimensional Art categories. 

The winning artists will now be featured on the Light Space & Time website for the month of January 2020 and thereafter, the artworks and links to the artist’s websites will remain online in the Light Space & Time Archives.

The overall winning artists’ category of the 9th Annual "All Women" Art Exhibition will receive extensive worldwide publicity and promotion.  In addition, the overall winning artists will also receive extensive worldwide publicity in the form of email marketing, 550+ press release announcements, event announcement posts and social media marketing.

1st Place – Cheryl Magellen – “Flying Geckos”

Ms. Magellen works primarily in oil and specializes in portraiture and figurative subject matter. Her work is impressionistic realism with loose, painterly brushwork. She prefers subjects of unusual character, as well as costumed figures and subjects in the performing arts and other creative fields. Her major painting influences comes from such artists as Daniel Sprick, Huihan Lui, and Gabriel Mark Lipper.

In addition to her figurative work, Ms. Magellen also does experimental work in acrylic and mixed media in subjects ranging from representational to abstract. Ms. Magellen has a BA in Fine Art and studied at the Southern Oregon Art Academy and the Scottsdale Artists' School. Her work has been accepted into an American Women Artists Museum exhibition and both Oil Painters of America National and Regional exhibitions and took a second place award in their Online Showcase. She is the founder of the Selfie Show and the Magellen Fine Art Youth Academy. She currently teaches and resides in Las Vegas, Nevada.

2nd Place – Overall - Hannah Li – “Wishes of the Mani Wheel”

As far back as Hannah can remember I was obsessed with storytelling. From crude scratches in the sandy gravel lining her community playground to the HB #2 masterpieces strewn across calculus worksheets, Hannah traversed across universes, immersing herself within the storylines and lives of characters she would never be able to meet in the tangible world. The rising socio-political art presence worldwide, tumultuous shifts in American and global circumstances, combined with angsty hormonal impulse, made Hannah completely reevaluate the power of the paintbrush. Unsatisfied with leaving her stories untold, she ultimately realized that she derives gratification by bringing light to things often overlooked.

To Hannah, art is a medium for something much greater than the canvas - with the artist as narrator - telling stories through light and dark, alizarin red and ultramarine blue, molding aesthetics with a vision for the future. Hannah Li constantly seeks to tell the stories of others through her art, aiming to capture the essence of vitality: from moments of exuberance to grief, allowing her audience to view the world through a clearer lens of perspective. Whether it be quietly sitting in front of a blank canvas, or shopping for new Windsor and Newton paints, Hannah wishes for each choice of color, brushstroke, and sketch to leave an impact.

3rd Place – Overall - Shelley Benjamin – “Night View”

Shelley Benjamin, a resident of southeast Florida, is an award winning digital artist. She received a BS in Textile Design from Cornell University. After a career as a textile designer and weaver, she became interested in mixed media, and ultimately, photography.

Shelley’s experimentation and involvement with digital photography began after she purchased her first DSLR camera. During the learning process, she joined an international group of digital artists. With the advanced training, she was able to develop her skills, which has allowed her to transform her images to reflect her vision. The inspiration from the group opened up the possibilities of taking photos into a new realm. She is motivated by the art she sees in museums and galleries. From the time she was young she has always been an avid museum visitor. Her background in weaving exposed her to the art of fine crafts and the masters in those fields.

Shelley uses her photos as the foundation for a digital painterly approach, utilizing modern technology to enhance and transform the original image. Drawing upon her textile design background, she imparts a tactile feeling to her work. She is challenged and inspired by color, reflections, light, the changing seasons, nature and architectural elements. Shelley is always searching for the extraordinary visual imagery in very ordinary environments.

Shelley states that her goal is to share the beauty around her and impart the uplifting feelings to the viewer that are the source of her inspiration. Her work has been exhibited in local and international competitions and in online galleries as well as being featured in national digital photo and print magazines.

4th Place – Overall - Lisa Ann Watkins – “Polar Reflection”

Lisa Ann Watkins is an International award winning artist & instructor born in Cornwall in the UK & currently living in the Forest of Dean. Lisa is best known for her work with coloured pencils but also combines other media into her art, such as inks & pastels. Her passions are of course her art but also animals & she endeavours to give the voiceless a voice working with leading animal rescues around the globe. This year she was awarded the Association of Animal Artists Inaugural Chairman of the Year Award in recognition her ethics of not only helping animals but also for striving to teach others how to embrace their own creative.

Lisa teaches all over the world & has over 300 students online each month. 2019 saw her signing her first major book deal with art publishers Search Press as well as the release of her own set of PanPastels. She creates tutorials & learning resources for budding artists of all levels. Lisa also collaborates with many well-known art brands to promote the products that she loves. Her art invokes character & captures 'a moment' as well as a likeness of her subjects. Each piece tells its own unique story.

5th Place – Overall - Irene Sirko - “A Matter of Degree”

Irene’s sculpture plays a very important part in her life. She always needed to express her artistic feelings. For many years, she had searched to find the right medium for 3-dimensional work. From the very first time she placed her hands on stone to sculpt, she was captivated. The freedom that comes with creating what she feels is enlightening and a perfect outlet for her creativity. Though Irene sculpted exclusively by hand for many years, she now includes the use of power tools. This enables her to expand how she sculpts and thereby create more interesting sculptures.

Irene’s art training includes Toronto School of Art, Wilfrid Laurier University, Haliburton School of Arts and private studies. She continuously experiences other media to expand her basis for creativity. Irene experiences an indescribable freedom when she sculpts. This freedom provides her motivation. Focusing on the abstract also ensures that the freedom continues.

When sculpting, Irene takes into account the visual impact of the stone, the planes that exist and the potential movement that can be created. She is constantly feeling the curves and lines of the sculpture. The continuous flow of the work is critical. Her style is to create sculptures that are simple, diverse and organic in nature.

Overall, Irene would like others to appreciate stone as a medium, sculpture as an art form and abstract as an open-ended way of having new perspectives, whatever that may be.

6th Place – Overall - Clara Sandu – “Tetris Fantasy”

I am a senior Arts Merit Scholar studying Studio Art and Neuroscience at Bucknell University. Ever since I can remember, I have been equally drawn to and perplexed by the idiosyncrasies of individuals and, more vastly, the human experience as a whole. Besides my work in visual art, I spend significant amounts of time studying the explicit workings of human cognition, behavior, and nervous function as a neuroscience major.

However, my interest in the human form extends beyond the functional pathways of neuroscience and crosses into the visual perception of humans, namely in a manner that lends itself to artistic representation. The way we see each other, with intricacy and nuanced composition, is ultimately a matter of light reflecting off the body, being received by the retina and processed as visual information––colored by emotion. Thus, is in light that I find the perfect union of the emotional and natural form of man; light carries both tone (configuration/disposition) and hue (which inevitably conveys emotion), rendering it an invaluable tool in the artists’ arsenal of mastery.

By using effects rooted in the color and light, I aim to completely immerse my audience in the world of my works’ protagonists. Color and light are now tools for transcendence, used to reframe and illuminate the visage of my subject. I intend to transcend the limited dynamics of a painting by employing these elements to add or subtract dimension, enhancing the emotional aura of my pieces...resulting in a hyper realistic work of art.

7th Place – Overall - Lizabeth Castellano-King – “Montauk Pier II”

A native New Yorker, Liz graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), NYC, Cum Laude, with a degree in Illustration/Graphic Design. After graduating FIT, she continued her education in Ohio with a scholarship to Columbus College of Art and Design. After Ohio, she went back to NYC where she spent 3 years working as a freelance illustrator for various clients and advertising agencies.

Marriage to an officer in the Marine Corps came next and her global travels ensued. This opportunity allowed her to explore and develop her love for watercolors. Without having any formal training in the medium, she is entirely self-taught and pursues her passion creating paintings from photos she has taken from her travels.

In Okinawa Japan, she remained gainfully employed with commissions for watercolor portraits, creating a distinguished list of worldwide clients, gaining confidence in her style and understanding the medium and all it had to offer. While in Monterey California, she participated in an Artist Studio Tour Event and was discovered by The Chris Bell Gallery. Chris was impressed with her style of watercolors that portrayed the local commercial fishing industry, so much so he offered to represent her work in his gallery in Monterey, CA.

Lizabeth’s realistic style of watercolor painting has often been mistaken for photographs, concentrating on detail to pull the viewer into her work. Although painting is Liz’s passion, technology brought a new interest and computer graphic design became her focus. In 2001, she was hired as a graphic designer for the Air Force at the Pentagon. She enjoyed the opportunity to bring her painting and design skills together with computer technology to be a part of and then lead an award-winning graphic design team, supporting the Air Force military mission for 16 years. This was one of the greatest jobs she could have ever imagined.

Liz currently resides in Stafford, VA. She is part of a CO-OP Studio in Fredericksburg, VA called Canal Quarter Arts where she displays and creates her paintings. Watercolors are an ongoing learning experience for Liz as she continues to evolve and improve her works with new techniques in both color and design.

8th Place – Overall - Patti Bradeis – “Sidetracked”

Patti Bradeis is an award-winning artist born in Philadelphia, PA and currently living in New Jersey. She draws her photorealistic portraits with graphite, carbon and charcoal. Her techniques have evolved from studying the works of artists she admires and experimenting with various tools to achieve her desired effect. She uses photographs as her references.

Quoting Renée Phillips, Director and Curator of Manhattan Arts International, “She not only achieves an incredible likeness to her subjects, she infuses her drawings with enormous love for humanity and her drawings evoke a powerful visceral effect on viewers. She reveals truths about many positive aspects of the human experience, particularly love, hope and unity that leap into our hearts.”

Patti recently published her first book. It is a delightful keepsake collection of her artwork she personally paired with verses from the Bible.

9th Place – Overall - Suzanne Gibbs – “Facing It (Cancer)”

Suzanne’s passion, love and enthusiasm for Art began as a toddler surrounded by her father’s wooden and metal sculptures, paintings and drawings. This was later enhanced by childhood visits to the famous London art galleries and museums. As far back as she can remember, when looking at scenes, objects, and even people, she immediately sees shape, proportion, colour and tone. It wasn’t until Suzanne became an art teacher, however, that she fully realized this.

Even today, she finds herself ‘air ‘drawing when without her sketchbook. Suzanne’s sketchbook is like the addition of the modern phone, her personal way of recording and responding to life. As with most artists, drawing is often the beginning of her creative process. Suzanne loves expressive mark making and the spontaneity and freedom of charcoal, pastel, graphite and pen. Equally, she is excited by mixing layers of colour and texture, smudging and blending with brushes and experimenting with new tools, materials and techniques.

Recently, Suzanne has become very fortunate to live and work in both England and Northern California. Following the tragic wildfires of Northern California last year, she put together a solo 3-month art exhibition and raised thousands of dollars for its victims and to commemorate the Carr fire. Although her Californian home survived the fire, its surrounding landscape was burnt to ashes. The texture and tonal range of the ash behind her home was a perfect medium to convey the beauty and hope in the loss and despair. The extinguished fire left a surface of temporary darkness, which she cleverly used as inspiration to capture the eerie transformation of her surroundings. Suzanne collected the burnt ash from around her property and worked with it like chalk or mixed it with the oil paint and applied it to the canvas. It was a new, exciting and emotive process, which she went on to develop further. The unique idea of using raw, personal, and tactile resources continues to drive and inspire Suzanne’s artwork. It enables her to connect with and process feelings and emotions.

She has used this technique in her latest piece, ‘Facing It’. This painting is an oil portrait of her sister, Sally, undergoing treatment for cancer. Suzanne collected, combed and applied Sally’s fallen hair to the powerful and emotive painting. It shows Sally’s reflection in the mirror, staring at the viewer. Her gaze is piercing, powerful and direct. She is facing the cancer, its consequences, symptoms, treatment and its side effects. In addition, Sally is facing an audience, a world outside and an unknown future. It is a hauntingly but beautiful portrait of vibrant colours. Sally’s baldness is juxtaposed with decoration, a colourful scarf, and make up, accentuating her eyes, where her eyebrows and eyelashes once were. The entire portrait is framed by a canvas of vibrancy, positivity and abstraction. Her hair, once her crowning glory, now makes up her wig and stands to the side of her. The wig is there to hide her baldness, hide the cancer, but from whom? Suzanne’s artwork encourages the viewer to stop looking, but to see, question and feel, however uncomforting or disturbing. Life throws us all challenges; some greater than others, but it is how we respond to and deal with them that matters.

10th Place – Overall - Merana Cadorette – “Sunrise Flight”

Merana delights in creating and sharing. Big, small, 2 or 3 dimensions, whatever media close to hand, she can't rest until the idea becomes reality. She has been an artist since "the first time someone gave her a crayon". Journeying through life, many subjects have caught her fancy. There are several series; from aviation to orchids, skyscapes to portraits; architecture to fantasy. Watercolors, acrylics, clay, mixed media...four plus decades of creating and experimenting.

Merana has been juried into shows from local to international, and won several awards. She designed an official Girl Scout poster, and her History Press "Gates of Savannah" sold out the entire edition. Recently, she earned a fourth place, Impressionistic figure, in the American Artists competition, juried by 25 US galleries with entries from 63 countries.
