1st Place - Merrilee Soberg – “The Timekeepers”

1st-Place-OA-58-pd.-Merrilee-Soberg-–-The-Timekeepers-bAfter retiring from a successful career as a professional potter, Merrilee turned to photography and digital art to fill the creative void. She honed her digital art skills in Sebastian Michael's Photoshop Artistry online courses. As a result, she has been published in numerous editions of "Living the Photoartistic Life" magazine and was featured in the February 2020 edition.

In 2020, Merrilee received first place in Fusion Art's "Leaves and Petals" competition plus second overall (first place in photography division) in "Light Space & Time's" Nature competition. Many of the photos used in Merrilee's compositions were taken at home on Vancouver Island on the west coast of Canada or during her world travels.

She is passionate about photographing wildlife, especially birds, in their natural habitat. As she lives on the edge of a seasonal wetland, other elements of nature regularly find their way into her artistic creations. These photos combined with digital painting are the building blocks used to create inspired, unique works of art that can be beautiful, intriguing, moving and at times thought provoking. She focuses on the resilience, strength and connectedness of the human spirit.

Nature and the human form....what a magical combination.

2nd Place - Renee Brown – “Guarded”

2nd-Place-OA-109-POM.-Renee-Brown-–-Guarded-bRenee Brown, a New York-based emerging artist delved into photorealism while earning her BFA at the Hartford Art School. While in attendance, she became the first recipient of the Helen Charleton Scholarship for her work in portraiture and was granted the Jerry A. Shoham/Jerry’s Artarama Connecticut prize for painting.

Following her degree, she attended the Summer Undergraduate Residency at the New York Academy of Art and has since exhibited her work across the east coast. With oil paint being her medium of choice, Brown uses rich colors to create intensely realistic imagery of the figure.

Growing up in a scenic part of Long Island, the clear night skies and local wildlife are an inspiration. There’s a sense of reflection and serenity echoing in each piece. It becomes quite an intimate space for both the artist and the viewer.

8th Place - Mary F. Vivo - "Greyhound Bus Station 1957”

8th-Place-OA-2-3d.-Mary-F.-Vivo-Greyhound-Bus-Station-1957-vMary grew up in Brooklyn, New York, attended The Cooper Union School of Art and later learned computer design at the School of Visual Art, both in New York City. Her work has been on exhibit in several shows including: The International Exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Yugoslavia; The International Women’s Exhibit in Washington, DC; Women’s Foundation of Genesee Valley’s “100 women/100 works”; the Stockton National Exhibition at the Haggin Museum in California; the 43rd Annual Exhibition at the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut, and most recently, a solo exhibition at the Iridian gallery in Richmond, Virginia.

Mary’s work has always been detail-oriented and the next logical step for her was to create in three-dimension. By combining her talents in wood construction, architecture, painting and drawing, Mary was able to produce what she calls “Housculptures”, 3-D, wooden replicas of building facades, entire structures, and their surroundings.

In the 30 years or so since Mary started this form of art, she has constructed a large variety of houses including two complete mansions, one in Southampton and the other in East Hampton, New York, a townhouse in Paris, France and a bay house in Cape Charles, Virginia.

9th Place - Barbara Smits – “Checkers on the Porch”

9th-Place-OA-45-pd.-Barbara-Smits-–-Checkers-on-the-Porch-bBarbara Smits has been involved in the arts in one form or another for fifty years. She is a writer, poet, playwright, photographer, videographer operating under the name Associated Video, former folk musician and music teacher, historian, and owner of Barbara Smits Artworks.

Smits received a correspondence course certificate in modern photography from the New York Institute of Photography in 1970 and has been a photographer since that time. She wrote newspaper and magazine articles illustrated with photographs and added Associated Video to her credits in the 1980’s. She produced “A Coming Together - Oneida White Corn Harvest” for Wisconsin Public Television’s Wisconsin network. She also produced a video for schools entitled “Wisconsin’s Old Military Road” and a video “Death Wind on the Plains” which dealt with the Frontier Army’s destruction of the buffalo after the Civil War in order to suppress and defeat the Plains Indians.

As president of the Ashwaubenon Historical Society, Smits was one of the organizers of the Military Road Sesquicentennial Wagon Train that crossed Wisconsin in 1998 on a two week, 250-mile journey following the Old Military Road that was constructed to connect Wisconsin’s three forts after the Blackhawk War in 1832. Upwards of 250 walkers, riders, authentic wooden wheel wagons and passengers participated in the wagon train at various intervals over the two-week journey from Prairie du Chien to Green Bay, and it was one of the highlights of the state’s grand sesquicentennial celebration. It was also a monumental organizational challenge to bring the event to a satisfactory completion!

Smits has partnered with Herman Bender of Fond du Lac to form Old Northwest Frontier tours, which produces self-guided, in-depth illustrated eBook tours for travelers who want to really get to know the areas they are visiting. Lake Winnebago, WI, Circle Tour - Volume One, East Shore Communities, is the first tour book published by Old Northwest Frontier Tours in a planned seven volume series covering Lake Winnebago. Volume one is available on the Apple Store and Amazon Kindle.

Smits has many interests that include history and the environment, but inspirational writing combined with photographic artworks is one of her highest motivations. She has recently published an EPUB book, “Living the Good Life With the Beatitudes,” which is available through Apple Books and Amazon Kindle. Unlike most meditation works, Smits uses modern day scenes and thoughts to bring the eight Beatitudes to life, involving the viewer in a personal way.

Smits also produces digital artworks from her photographs by using modern software computer programs. She prints her own artworks as giclée prints, and many include written text or poetry; all prints have a colored border, title, and location as part of their presentation, although they can also be printed as straight photographs. Wisconsin and historical artworks are two of her specialties. Smits is also working on opening an online sales store and gallery.

Smits is 77 years old and has worked in her vision of what it means to be an artist during her entire lifetime. Her writing and photography covering various subjects has been sold throughout Wisconsin through decorators, designers, art shows, and individual art sales.

Smits says, “Photography opens up the world, and places and things you photograph become part of you. Life is never boring when you look for truth and beauty all around you, in everything you see. It is wonderful to be an art photographer!”

10th Place - Tanya Marie Reeves – “Jane”

10th-Place-OA-202-POM.-Tanya-Marie-Reeves-–-Jane-bI love the sensual curves of the female form, the striking boldness of saturated acrylics, the splendour of intense brilliant block colour and striking contrast; it is where my artwork as an adult began over 25 years ago. And while the basis of my unique style has remained, driven by the design and manipulation of strong contrasting colours and lines, overtime, what began as purely aesthetic artworks, has become something else entirely.

Ultimately, through my own life struggles and experiences I’ve learned so much about what can be hidden inside oneself; the strength and determination which arose from within me which I had never even known existed, became my driving force, in both my life and my art.

And so, I create empowering paintings of women. I take a woman’s inner strength and I bring it bolstering to the surface, choreographed with passion, heightening her physical prowess, celebrating her diversity, reveling in her beauty and sexuality, revealing her sensuality, her secrets and mystery. And most significantly, saluting her confidence, heart and spirited strength of character.

My technique predominantly consists of saturated acrylic paint, exhibiting vibrant block colour and dramatic contrast, the sultry curves of the female body and the faultless lines of geometry and pattern. With hand and brush only, I achieve beautiful unyielding saturation while exhibiting a meticulous sense of order and impeccable print-like quality. Periodically I will include textiles and alternate mixed media in my artwork, the choreography of such resulting in the perfect combination of stimulating texture and divergence.

My name is Tanya Marie Reeves, I am a 40-something single mum of two grown teenagers and a self-taught professional artist, born, raised, living and creating in my hometown of Broken Hill, Australia.
