Artist Biography

Cat Denby is an internationally recognized, award-winning animal artist and pet portraitist. She got a taste of art initially as a dog groomer and eventually redirected her focus to commercial art in the early 2000’s. She has worked as the Art Director for Web Weaving and Consulting for nearly 20 years. In 2009, she began studying fine art and taught herself to draw in graphite and pastel in her spare time.

Numerous volunteer positions gave Cat the opportunity to donate and show work in local venues, and her popularity with pet owners and art lovers quickly grew after an exhibition in nearby Charlottesville in 2013. Demand for commissioned portraits and donated work inspired her to officially embark upon a career creating art for animal lovers worldwide.

Cat has a passion not only for creating and sharing art, but also for nurturing the desire to create. She has served as an advisory board member on the Art Guild of Greene and a Palette Art Gallery artist since 2015. Her work has developed and grown thanks to the many fine artists with whom she has had the privilege of working with at the Palette. Cat has taught many budding artists to love drawing and enjoys helping artists refine their vision. She is a member of American Women Artists and the Portrait Society of America.

In addition to the over 300 portraits she has created for animal lovers internationally, Cat has won awards for her portraits and shown her original work in galleries, veterinary offices, art shows and restaurants throughout Virginia. Just recently she was recognized by the Camelback Gallery as a finalist in the 2019 Animals exhibit. She has also created logos for numerous organizations and has donated several pieces to animal rescues nationwide.

What drives Cat is a belief that art should be accessible to all people, both those who create it and those who admire it. Her work reflects a tireless effort to balance realism and impressionism in the study of portraiture while unmistakably capturing the unique personality of the individual. She is proud to be the portraitist for several champion Crufts and Westminster canines, but her true source of pride lies in the portraits she has drawn to help rescue pets find fur-ever homes.

Artist Statement

The primary focus of my work is to capture a personality and invoke the emotions inspired by that unique individual. I am also intrigued by the nuance of art, striving to create pieces that are both realistic and impressionistic at once by playing with the line between fully realized details and loose strokes on raw paper.
