Artist Biography:
Catherine Pickop was born in Hong Kong in 1983. Having brought up in an autocratic and conservative family, she has been constantly feeling insufficient and anxious throughout her life. She graduates from Business studies and hotel management and working hard for money for ten years.
The life of chasing money confuses her even more, she decided to give up her career and concentrate on seeking the meaning of life, freedom, and companionship. Art is the only substantive way for her to communicate with herself. Throughout the last 3 years of studying in Fine Art offered by RMIT, she finds that life has another meaning for her.
Catherine especially interested in how art can help to express internal emotions and rationalize inner thoughts. She started using coffee residue as a personal material in art making through a stream of consciousness as a tool to study herself. Catherine’s works are a visual reflection of her mind, the process of art-making is described how she sees the world, reconstructed than reappearing on paper in minimal abstract form. It is a spiritual evolution. She continues to use art to find internal peace and an appreciation of the beauty of imperfection.
Artist Statement:
The process of my art making is a description of how I observe the world, digest and reconstruct it. It is a self-communication and a visual representation of my mind and a journey of self-discovery.
This series of artworks began a year ago when I decided to use a coffee residue as a personal material in art-making as a tool to study my inner self. By exploring various types of art forms, ranging from sketching, painting, mark making, sculpture, and video I finally achieved a visual language which reflects my mind.
Through this series of works, I have found peace and stillness as well as an appreciation of the beauty of imperfection.
Repetition, stillness, and rhythm are essential elements in my work; they help me to create a moment of silence within me. Drawings circles for me is chasing the harmony of order and beauty. The gesture of rubbing coffee residue and color minerals on paper using my body temperature, skin and pressure of my fingers alone to control the tonal movement in color is for me an intimacy between my body, paper, and the medium. The sound, as well as the feeling, is therapeutic, meditative and liberating. Catherine’s website is https://catherinepickop.com
