1st  Place – Matthew Jackson - “Skyline”

1st Place – Overall - Matthew Jackson - “Skyline” – www.eclecticimagesart.comMy art is born of depression. Beginning in 2007, I found myself as the senior government official. My ego was huge. I played the game very well. When I attended meetings with Generals they listened to what I had to say. I had a big head and needed a new hat! I was arrogant, bold and opinionated. I was consumed by my job to the exclusion of my family and the truth of who I was meant to be. In 2009, as the pressures and excesses mounted, I was toppled and descended into a profound depression.

As I recovered, I found solace through Photo Shop PS CS6. I began making pictures and eventually reclaimed my life through art. The images I create speak to the person who was hidden for all those years. I am liberated from the mundane world I once dominated. I create digital art that is a vision unique to my experience. All my images are photo based, most taken by me, but some taken by friends or relatives, or are from the public domain. I will often combine images to achieve the vision I am striving for at that moment. I do not claim to follow a particular genre, though I believe a common strain runs through my work. My art is full of motion and bright with color.

Now, at age 65, I show my work in Denver and in mountain art fairs throughout Colorado. I am retired now from the Department of Defense and I am actively supported in my artistic endeavors by my spouse of 40 years and my children. I don’t know what the future has in store for me. I do know that this journey is not over.

5th  Place – Elliot Appel - “Village Laundry”

5th Place – Overall - Elliot Appel - “Village Laundry” – www.elliotappel.comElliot Appel was born in New York City in 1952 and has been painting for almost 30 years. As a child, he was fascinated by film and frequently sketched pictures of the celebrities he admired to see if he could capture a likeness. Mr. Appel continued sketching in this way through high school, and his first major encouragement was finishing second place in a poster-making contest for a play that was to be performed at his school.

Subsequently, Mr. Appel enrolled in New York’s City College, registering for a degree in liberal arts but left college after one year to travel in Israel. In between jobs, Mr. Appel spent the next few years traveling through Europe, fortifying the education he’d begun with trips to museums in Paris, Geneva, Florence, Milan, Venice, Rome and Athens In his early twenties, Mr. Appel sold the first of many paintings in the photo realistic style that has come to define his art, a cathedral in acrylic paint, based on a photo from a magazine.

Mr. Appel’s cityscapes and storefronts call to mind the iconic images of American artists like John Sloan or Edward Hopper, who were influenced by film, and whose crisp, light-flooded takes on modern realistic street scenes inspired American film sets for decades. Appel’s images of old New York City storefronts, with their graffiti-covered doorways, city grime and sharp perspective both confront and draw the viewer into the vital, cinematic-like worlds that he creates. He has often said that he tries to capture “details of everyday life that people may not notice or take for granted as they rush from place to place.”

Mr. Appel has exhibited his work in Soho, Lever House, Lincoln Center, the Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Staten Island and the Monmouth Museum. Recently, he has had one person shows at the Hoboken Historical Museum and the Watchung Arts Center in New Jersey. He is the recipient of several awards and has developed a small but loyal following within the tri-state area.

6th  Place – Peter Alessandria - “NYC 2"

6th Place – Overall - Peter Alessandria - “NYC 2” – www.peteralessandriaphotography.comPeter was born and raised in New York City and Long Island. After attending law school, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as an entertainment attorney. Today he is an award-winning, fine art, portrait and commercial photographer based in the New York City area.

Peter spent the first part of his work life as an entertainment and intellectual property attorney in Los Angeles. Working in the film and television industries sparked his own interest in creativity and in the early 2000’s he began experimenting with digital video and became an amateur filmmaker. But it wasn't until he picked up a still camera for the first time in 2002, that his full creative passion for image-making came into being.

Like many people, things changed dramatically for Peter in 2008. That year, as a result of the Global Financial Crisis, he lost his law practice. In the days and weeks that followed he struggled with the question of what to do with the rest of his life. It was only after much deliberation that he decided to follow his passion for photography, and in late 2009, he began pursuing photography full-time.

As a fine art photographer, Peter has created numerous collections of landscape, seascape, cityscape and still life images. His work has been featured in dozens of solo and group photography and art exhibitions. He has won sixty seven (67) awards in the past few years and his photos have been published nationally and internationally, as well as being shown on television and in feature films. He has published two books of his fine art photography. His most recent - “New York Cityscapes” – topped the Amazon “New Releases” list and is a collaboration with six other NYC photographers. He is an Official Photographer for Fireworks by Grucci® and travels the world photographing their performances. His life and career has been the subject of several newspaper, radio, Internet and television interviews.

Peter finds inspiration mostly in the work of other photographers - and not necessarily the famous ones. Rather, it is his peers, many of whom he connects with on social media, that inspire Peter to go out and try new things or shoot in new locations. This connecting with others has helped fuel his creativity greatly over the last several years.

As both a photographer and filmmaker Peter’s intent is simple: create compelling images that appeal to his own sense of beauty and aesthetics. His goal is to use his art - and his life - to inspire others. He shares his photos in the hopes of touching people’s hearts and minds in positive and uplifting ways.

9th  Place – Martina Krupi?ková - “Tram No. 2"

9th Place – Overall - Martina Krupi?ková - “Tram No. 2” – www.martinakrupickova.comMartina Krupi?ková was born in the Czech town of Sv?tlá nad Sázavou, which is approximately 100 km from Prague, Czech Republic. In 1990, one year after the Velvet Revolution, Martina commenced Fashion Design and Textile studies at a prestige school in Brno. These studies, lasting four years, improved her design, drawing and painting skills. In 1995 Martina travelled to London, working as an au pair and spending her leisure time sketching subjects in St. James’s Park. In 1998 she spent six months traveling in the United States meeting people who made her realise anything was possible. In 1999 Martina returned to Prague and started to paint oil on a black canvas using a palette knife.

Martina has since had 28 exhibitions, including works in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Art Tentation Monaco and the Edinburgh Art Fair. Martina was one of 48 competitors chosen to appear in the UK Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year 2018 TV series. 10th  Place – John Edington - “Three Degrees of Verticality II”

10th Place – Overall - John Edington - “Three Degrees of Verticality II” – jmedington@comcast.netJohn Michael “Mike” Edington is an emerging artist born and raised in Michigan. From an early age, he was exposed to the arts and was guided into the world of music, painting, photography, and literature. Encouraged by their parents, the Edington children grew up in an environment where the powers of the imagination and creativity were strongly nurtured and these influences have colored Mike’s experiences and perceptions throughout his life.

Upon receiving his BA in history and literature, Mike served in the United States Army and then made a career in management for the automotive manufacturing and computer services industries retiring from Hewlett Packard in 2012. Since retiring, Mike has recast himself as a writer, photographer, a student of art, and most recently as an artist. A fan of Monet’s use of light and Marc Chagall’s vibrant colors he also finds inspiration in the imaginative abstractions of the Abstract Expressionists including Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler, Jean Paul Riopelle, and Arshile Gorky.

As a life-long photographer with a technology background, it was an easy step for Mike to begin to explore the use of the artist’s tools available on the computer to translate the representational forms in his photographs into various degrees of abstraction. Starting with a digital image from his photo shoots, he uses the computer to create the colors of his imagination and the shapes from his subconscious changing the literal representation of the “what is” to the abstraction of “what could be” – excursions of instinct altering the composition, light, and color seeking to create an alternative and unique perception of life and culture.

Upon completion, his images are rendered to paper, canvas, or his preferred medium, aluminum, using high tech fusion printing processes that accentuate the aesthetically pleasing bright colors and movement he endeavors to express in his art. His images seek to challenge his viewers to experience a journey into a space devoid of the “literal” and the rules of a conforming society into an alternative world. His works are non-prescriptive, eclectic reflections of shy pastels and vibrant primes in an often-unworldly light.

After a year of experimentation and with the support and guidance from friends and family in the artist community, 2017 was Mike’s first opportunity to make his work available to the public eye. His work has been selected for exhibition at the 36th Annual Michigan Fine Arts Competition, the All Michigan All Media Visual Arts Competition, and numerous online gallery exhibits. Mike, his wife Elaine and their three cats live in Flushing, Michigan where he spends his time gardening, golfing, writing, as well shooting pictures and making art.
