The “Solo Art Series” is a series of monthly solo art exhibitions for established artists who have a body of work to present to the public. Artist participants were asked to submit the following 3 components for the “Solo Art Series” competition: 1. Their art. 2. Their artist biography. 3. Their artist statement. These elements were evaluated and judged, which resulted in the selection of the artists who will be featured in individual month-long solo art exhibitions. This was the 12th “Solo Art Series” Art Competition that the gallery has conducted.
Below is Ilona’s Artist Biography, her Artist Statement, along with 15 of her images. We hope that you will take the time to read Ilona’s information and to take a look at her digital artwork.
Artist Biography:
Ilona Abou-Zolof loves photography because it makes her see the world, her environment and people in a very different way. Through her photography, she found herself becoming much more observant and appreciative of everyday things.
Ilona sees beauty all around. When she started her journey with photography, she loved just taking photos of children and animals. She didn't like posed images. She liked them more natural or candid, but found that by sticking with only two subject matters, she very quickly ran out of interesting photos.
Therefore, Ilona went out of her comfort zone and tried other things like landscape, seascape, portraiture, macro, weddings and street photography. She is now at a stage where she thinks of herself as an image-maker and digital artist, rather than an image taker.
Ilona will get an idea and take images she can use to fulfil her idea. She has as much fun taking the images as she does processing them in Lightroom and Photoshop afterwards. She uses the digital tools to convert her photos into digital artwork and she pushed herself, again, beyond her comfort zone.
Ilona has learned how to use digital painting to convert her images and composites into paintings. She enjoys learning new ways of making her art different.
Artist Statement:
I love the Steampunk scene. We have about six different steampunk fairs each year. My friend and I will visit as many as we can. We have made many friends. Most of our models make their own costumes and are happy for us to photograph them. The backgrounds are always quite busy and messy. Our skills with photo artistry allow us to transfer our model into more pleasant and appropriate surroundings. We always give our beautiful models digital copies. They love getting images that are an imaginary reality.
