The Overall Winning Artists Category consists of the 10 Best Entries received from the 2 media categories of the Painting & Other Media Category and Photography & Digital Art categories. 

The winning artists will now be featured on the Light Space & Time website for the month of October 2020 and thereafter, the artworks and links to the artist’s websites will remain online in the Light Space & Time Archives.

The overall winning artists’ category of the 10th Annual "Landscapes" Art Exhibition will receive extensive worldwide publicity and promotion. In addition, the overall winning artists will also receive extensive worldwide publicity in the form of email marketing, 550+ press release announcements, event announcement posts and social media marketing. 

Winning artists will also have their art exhibition results posted and promoted on ArtJobs/ArtWeek. Artweek/Artjobs produces 800,000 page impressions per month, 280,000 website visitors per month and has 30,000 newsletter subscribers.

1st Place - Barbara Mierau-Klein - “Hunts Mesa”

Barbara Mierau-Klein is a digital artist recognized for her multi-layered, imaginative and colorful fine art images. A native of Germany, Barbara lives in the Washington, D.C. area but often travels the world as a passionate landscape and nature photographer since her teenage years.

Much of Barbara’s work is highly stylized and focuses on beautiful moments and evocative moods across a wide range of subjects. The inspiration for her images comes from many sources, often her own nature photography, but also books, song lyrics, movies, and works of other artists, old masters as well as contemporary digital artists.

Barbara’s work has been exhibited in a number of galleries in the US and Europe and has received numerous awards. Her images also appear regularly in international art magazines. Barbara is represented locally by Waverly Street Gallery in Bethesda, MD.

I am an artist from Nigeria. I have a higher national diploma in arts, with a concentration in painting, from the institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu, Nigeria. Art has been a very important part of my life and it has given me a voice to express my inner most feelings and address the everyday challenges in my society. My inspiration comes from the everyday life experiences and challenges we face. All I have is my dream and I believe my art will get me to the point I want to be in life.

3rd Place - Stephen Edwards - “Forgotten Holiday”

Stephen Edwards has been drawing and painting the world he sees from a very young age. He would ask his father to show him how to draw a subject and he would emulate it until it reached perfection. Thus, his love of art was reinforced for the rest of his life. Though his father always wanted to be a commercial artist himself, he did not approve of his son becoming one. Stephen went to college studying biology and chemistry. It seemed that art would never again enter his life. However, life has a way of presenting and righting a wrong that might have been missed.

With his mother gravely ill, Stephen was called upon to help take care of her; a situation that continued for three years until her death. During the interval that he was caring for her, he returned to art, drawing, and eventually painting to help pass his time through the day. Through that study, he taught himself color theory and how to mix colors with paint. He read art books about composition and values. Starting with oils, he later switched to watercolors. Essentially, he is self-taught, though he likes to think he has learned from the masters though all those books he studied. A year after his mother’s death he entered his first art competition and won best of show as a professional artist. Art was officially again part of his life.

To be an artist, one must immerse themselves in the art world. And that he did. Joining and being accepted in various local and national groups became second nature to him. He served as president and other various board duties. He co-founded the Watercolor Society of Indiana in 1982. He has shown in many exhibitions both local and national. He is a signature member of the Watercolor Society of Indiana, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society and the Hoosier Salon.

His paintings are an exploration into representations of the ages and settings, as well as depictions and ideas that can only be realized in paintings. By taking daily life as subject matter, he creates work that deals with the documentation of events and the question of how they can be presented. The work tries to express this with the help of color and values, by telling a story or creating a metaphor of a memory. His works are characterized using everyday objects in an atmosphere of conventional mindset in which recognition plays an important role. With Plato’s allegory of the cave in mind, he investigates the dynamic contrasts of the subjects he chooses, including the manipulation of their effects and the limits of their vision based on our assumptions of what the subject means to us. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of the viewer’s imagination and the artist’s mood.

4th Place - Gary R Hook - “Sunset at Shiprock”

Gary R Hook is a photographer that makes his home just outside of Austin, in central Texas. His exploration in photography began in 2012, with an emphasis on portraiture and stage work. Over time, interests have expanded to include a variety of techniques and subjects, with a mindset that endeavors to find the art in everything.

A classically trained musician most of his life, Gary has also enjoyed a career as a software developer. These two disciplines combine both the technical and the creative; it was not surprising, then, that a casual interest in photography would become a passion. He finds the world a visually interesting place, and believes that beauty awaits discovery in the most unlikely of places. It is this perspective that drives him to explore and to capture.

Gary has been honored with acceptance into the Chania International Photographic Festival every year, the Blank Wall Gallery, the Pennsylvania Center for Photography, and has been awarded ribbons at festivals in Round Rock, TX. He is a founder of Round Rock Image Creators, a meet-up based in Round Rock, Texas that focuses on the aesthetics, art, and craft of photography.

5th Place - Laurie Snow Hein - “Ozello Trail”

Laurie Snow Hein has been painting since first grade when she first picked up a paintbrush and watched the bright paint colors dripping down the paper. It was love at first stroke. Her parents had convinced her that is was impossible to make a career as an artist; but it was in her DNA. Both parents, brother and grandmother were multi-talented in the arts. At age twelve, she started studying with Graham Ingels, a retired illustrator who was famous for “Tales From the Crypt.” Her high school teacher encouraged her to apply for a scholarship, which she received from Columbus College of Art and Design. She decided to major in Industrial design to be practical. At the end of her first year Laurie was the first freshmen at CCAD to be awarded the Katherine m/ Tuttle Scholarship.

After college, she married and six children later at age 40, was suddenly in need of supporting her family by herself. Her strength was in the arts, portrait painting primarily, so she immediately started advertising to paint portraits. Her garage was converted to a teaching studio and she took a job instructing in all mediums and teaching at two local country clubs. When her paintings of children and animals were noticed by a national publisher, her career in art licensing and reproductions was launched. God blessed her and provided the opportunity and ability to support and raise her children on her artistic talent. Had it not been for the necessity of using her artistic abilities she would have never grown to be the artist she is today.

Working 30 years as a professional artist, teacher, licensed artist, illustrator and showing at art festival circuits, Laurie now shows primarily in Florida. Her subject is concentrated on local landscapes, beaches and wildlife. The beauty and variety of God’s creation is all the inspiration needed when exploring the amazing world we have to enjoy. Large paintings that make you feel in the moment are her forte. Although very realistic, her brush strokes are bold and rich with colors, transparent glazing and textures. You feel like you could almost step into the painting. The pace was so hard and demanding for many years that there wasn’t time to consider entering contest for awards. Now at 70 plus there is a focus to share her art more with of her peers and enter competitions to create a greater value for her hundreds of collectors.

Traveling is a passion while she searches out the heart of the locations she visits to paint. In 2019, Laurie traveled across the US on a 90-day trip to start a new collection of artwork representing our National Parks.

6th Place - Kristopher Schoenleber - “Got the Blues”

Photography has been Kristopher's passion since childhood. As a child, he used his father’s Kodak to grab pictures of just about anything and everything. Now as an adult, Kristopher feels lucky to have a career as a broadcast news photographer. He has been working in news for almost 19 years, and has received several NY Emmy nominations, along with winning two NY Emmys.

Still photography is Kristopher's escape, and when he can find the time, he loves to travel to discover new places to capture. In the last few years, he's had a number of pieces in many local art shows, coming away with several Best in Shows. Some of his photos were also chosen for publication in the photography books “The Real Jersey Shore” by the Asbury Park Press in 2011, and “New Jersey 350th Anniversary” by NJBIZ.com in 2014. His photography was also featured in the instructional book, “Sumo for Mixed Martial Arts,” a 2016 Foreward INDIES Finalist, and National Park Trips Media 2017 Yosemite Park Guide magazine.

Kristopher loves to show his work, and let his photos take people into a different world. A picture can stir up all sorts of emotions, and he hopes that sometimes his shots can make that kind of impact on the audience. He captures the world around him as he sees it and feels that it is important to make photographs for people to escape into. His ultimate goal is to produce images that are almost hyper-realistic, but do not slip into the look of otherworldly.

Since he started studying and learning photography using film, he always find himself drawn to a more simple shot. He looks to black and white, sharp lines, patterns and strong contrast over intense colors and busy scenes. His work projects calm and quiet, loneliness and a connection with the landscape. Kristopher tends to keep people out of his shots, as he wants to convey the feeling of being the last person on Earth and a feeling of being one with nature.

7th Place - Robbi Ling Montgomery - “Haunting Fog”

Robbi is a photographer and a digital artist. Creating an image may be as simple as a few enhancements to a photograph or it may involve complex technical manipulations that abstract one or more photographs into an image that is her version of altered reality. Abstraction allows her to show the potential that her mind perceives, not just what her eyes and the camera see.

Robbi lives in Northern Illinois. She lived in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota for most of her life until retirement led to the move to Illinois. She earned both a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree from the University of Minnesota. She worked in healthcare for forty years as a Medical Laboratory Scientist and Educator. Between family life and career, she didn’t have the time or opportunity to explore her artistic side until after retirement.

Robbi thought of herself primarily as a scientist during her working-life, but used her creativity for problem solving in the laboratory and designing education units and methods.   Although she had an interest in photography, she didn’t get beyond the point-and-shoot stage until after she retired from her career. She bought a DSLR camera and enrolled in photography classes at the Regenstein School of the Chicago Botanic Garden. She started out in a program for documenting nature but soon discovered that she enjoyed the courses in fine art and abstract photography.

She has now completed two certificate programs at the school. Through these courses, she explored techniques for post-processing using computer software to create works of art from her photographs. Her science and technology background now enhance her creative skills. She finds great joy in shooting a beautiful photograph but also tremendous fulfillment when she finds hidden beauty in her photographs through post-processing and digital artistry.

8th Place - Eleni Gemeni - “Dreaming of another World”

Eleni Gemeni is a digital artist and experimental photographer based in Luxembourg. Throughout her academic career, she had pursued fields of study and ideas that have interested her. She studied economics, art & interior design and translation & applied linguistics.

Her abiding love in art and science is manifested in her artworks. She dedicated her free time to exploring cosmos, time, life, nature and everything in between. This is also the journey revealed in her art. Painting, collage, digital art, photography are her tools. Emotions, humor, drama, whimsy, mischief, surrealism, allegory and visionary thinking are her ingredients for her creative artworks. For her digital art, she uses mixed techniques to create her artworks. It's a combination of her own drawings, paintings, sketches, and collages, painted or digitally created backgrounds and mobile photography, embellished and altered with brushes, textures, elements from mobile applications and other resources. All these are manipulated and artistically edited on her mobile phone and tablet.

Her creative journey continues also with her experimental photography, analog, instant, digital and mobile. Almost a decade ago, she was introduced into the lomography pop style photography. She fell in love with the vintage analog flair of the photographs and started experimenting with her lomo and instant cameras. It was only a matter of time before she decided to step into mobile photography and art. Photomontage and experimental photo manipulation play a key role to her creative expression. Her post processing and digital art techniques are exploratory and unconventional, making her art a visual journey that embraces the unexpected.

Today, she is an award winning mobile photographer, has received multiple honorable mentions in mobile digital art and photography in major international juried competitions. Her work has been featured in distinguished art publications, social media, online art galleries and exhibited in Palo Alto CA, Savannah GA, Florence, IT, Porto, PT, Zurich, CH, Miami, FL and New York, NY

9th Place - Kolbjørn Håseth - “The Ridge”

Kolbjørn Håseth left studies of oil platform stability to become a fulltime artist in 1982, he is self-taught, and has had over fifty one man shows since then, in addition to many group shows, and is a member of organizations for professional artists in Norway, and IGOR (International Guild of Realism). He has won several international awards for his acrylic paintings in a contemporary realism style. Landscapes are still an important part of his production, but he also likes to concentrate upon details like rock surfaces, ponds, leaves etc.

There is nothing better and more powerful than nature. Her energy and beauty have always been the source of my inspiration.
