The Overall Winning Artists Category consists of the 10 Best Entries received from the 3 media categories of the Painting & Other Category, Photography & Digital Category and the 3 Dimensional Art categories. 

The winning artists will now be featured on the Light Space & Time website for the month of October 2020 and thereafter, the artworks and links to the artist’s websites will remain online in the Light Space & Time Archives.

The overall winning artists’ category of the 10th Annual "Open" Art Exhibition will receive extensive worldwide publicity and promotion.  In addition, the overall winning artists will also receive extensive worldwide publicity in the form of email marketing, 550+ press release announcements, event announcement posts and social media marketing. 

Winning artists will also have their art exhibition results posted and promoted on ArtJobs/ArtWeek. Artweek/Artjobs produces 800,000 page impressions per month, 280,000 website visitors per month and has 30,000 newsletter subscribers.

1st Place – August Naude - “What We've Lost”

After retirement from a successful career in the ICT world in Pretoria, South Africa, August quickly discovered his immense passion for artistic photography, digital art and low key & grunge photography. Therefore, it was no surprise when he joined the various training programmes of the “father of digital art”, the famous Sebastian Michaels based in Asheville (USA) who has influenced the artwork of August to a large extent. August also graduated at the New York Institute of Photography with distinction, specializing in Intense Portrait Photography.

August almost got molded in a record time, becoming a master in low-key studio work, grunge photo art as well as full blast digital art and artistic photography. He was selected as one of Photoshop Artistry’s international top digital artists, which is called “Kaizen”, and this group produce the most magical works of art. His work has been published in over 50 international publications all over the globe. He was featured artist in a number of publications, like edition 50 of the famous magazine, Living The Photo Artistic Life.

During his artistic journey, August participated (and is still participating) in various group exhibitions and he has received numerous honorary mentions and international prizes for his work. He was invited by Eikon Culture Visual Reflections, being the only South African between artists of over 70 countries to participate in three international exhibitions in Italy. During 2017 to 2020, August has been exhibiting at the Heaven Art Gallery, which was based in Arizona as well as the Orenda Gallery, which was in Nevada. August is consistently exhibiting at the Blank Wall Gallery, in Athens, the annual Chania International Photo Festival in Greece, the More Art Please gallery in Romania as well as various online exhibitions like Fusion Art Gallery. His work is on display and is accessible internationally. August’s exhibition at Fusion Art during August 2018 walked away with Best in Show in the 3rd Artist's Choice International Juried Art Exhibition and his exhibition at Light Space & Time in 2019, resulted in first place in the Figurative Art Exhibition (Photography & Digital category).

Photography and the creation of art is not a job for August. It is rather living an artistic life, which he is extremely passionate about.

2nd Place – Kathy M Paulus - “Fly Away Horse”

Kathy Paulus resides in Moreno Valley, California. She considers herself a self-taught artist specializing in pastel work. She specializes in pet/wild animal portraits and still life subjects. She has done many commissioned animal portraits and enjoys the joy it brings to a devoted pet owner. She enjoys realism and the challenge to capture the real beauty in animals. She has a special love for horses and all wild cats. She also enjoys painting still life subjects. She also enjoys working with colored pencils

She has been exploring scratch art and she became a member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artist in 2018. She alternates working with pastels and scratch work. She is an active member of the Redlands Art Association in Redlands, California and Yucaipa Vision Quest Art Association in Yucaipa, California. She is involved in the international group of artist and photographers, Paint My Photo. She is also involved in many online groups as well.

She enjoys teaching in workshops and sharing the knowledge she has obtained through the years in the area of pastels and scratch art. She enters many local and international art shows and has won many awards for her pastel work and Scratch art.

3rd Place – Julie Powell - “The Crow”

I adore Crows and Ravens the symbolic meanings, the portents of change and the historic significance within art. I have captured many photos of these birds over the years and wanted to capture something of their playful essence in some fairy-tale like scenes. Hence, my FairyTale Seasons series and the addition of a Halloween inspired Moonlit crow. All have been created in Photoshop with digital elements and photos

4th Place – Stephen Edwards - “Looking for Patch”

Stephen Edwards (°1951, Indianapolis, Indiana) has been drawing and painting the world he sees from a very young age. He would ask his father to show him how to draw a subject and he would emulate it until it reached perfection. Thus, his love of art was reinforced for the rest of his life. Though his father always wanted to be a commercial artist himself, he did not approve of his son becoming one. Stephen went to college studying biology and chemistry. It seemed that art would never again enter his life. But life has a way of presenting and righting a wrong that might have been missed.

With his mother gravely ill, Stephen was called upon to help take care of her; a situation that continued for three years until her death. During the interval that he was caring for her, he returned to art, drawing and eventually painting to help pass his time through the day. Through that study, he taught himself color theory and how to mix colors with paint. He read art books about composition and values. Starting with oils, he later switched to watercolors. Essentially, he is self-taught, though he likes to think he has learned from the masters though all those books he studied. A year after his mother’s death he entered his first art competition and won best of show as a professional artist. Art was officially again part of his life.

To be an artist, one must immerse himself in the art world. And that he did. Joining and being accepted in various local and national groups became second nature to him. He served as president and other various board duties. He co-founded the Watercolor Society of Indiana in 1982. He has shown in many exhibitions both local and national. He is a signature member of the Watercolor Society of Indiana, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society and the Hoosier Salon.

His paintings are an exploration into representations of the ages and settings, as well as depictions and ideas, which can only be realized in paintings. By taking daily life as subject matter, he creates work that deals with the documentation of events and the question of how they can be presented. The work tries to express this with the help of color and values, by telling a story or creating a metaphor of a memory.

His works are characterized using everyday objects in an atmosphere of conventional mindset in which recognition plays an important role. With Plato’s allegory of the cave in mind, he investigates the dynamic contrasts of the subjects he chooses, including the manipulation of their effects and the limits of their vision based on our assumptions of what the subject means to us. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of the viewer’s imagination and the artist’s mood.

His works establish a link between the subject’s reality and that imagined by its conceiver. By exploring the concept of his subject in a nostalgic way, Stephen Edwards often creates work using creative techniques, but they are never permissive. Painting is a serious matter: during the process of creation, different rules apply than in everyday life. And even mundane and everyday subjects undergo transformation with his brushes. If they don’t exist, then they should; an opinion voiced by an art show critic viewing his work for the first time.

5th Place – Gareth Jones - “Dematerialization of Forks in the Colour Realm”

Photography and digital art are Gareth’s artistic releases. After taking up photography after a career as a forensic scientist, Gareth has been able to bring his imagination, vision, and inquisitive mind to visual life.

Gareth’s art mostly explores bold abstracts or unique perspectives that are created from his original photographs or digital art pieces. Gareth uses both monochromatic and colour perspectives in final images, as he believes they evoke quite different emotions in viewers. By looking to connect images to viewers – and in these uneasy times – Gareth wants to balance life. He wants to present moments of beauty, quiet joy or intrigue in balance with the need to draw attention to important issues.

Everyone needs a break from the unending negative news all around the world and Gareth attempts to give people a breather from the stress of today’s world. This is not to say he doesn't bring difficult issues into his art - but Gareth is convinced that balance is the critical issue, especially as for most of us, our worlds are not in balance. He hopes his art helps to heal this disparate world through creative expressions, thoughtful moments and visual enjoyment or challenge.

Gareth never says no to an image, be it traditional or not, be it something he’s created or captured, but simply because it shouts out to him "Look at me". He’s photographing the world with all its wonders and creations, big and small, that simply make him stop and look, or think, or smile, or feel and then he puts his take on it. Gareth’s images are that gift - a moment to look, think, smile or feel whatever the image calls up in you.

He lets his curiosity fuel the exploration of the world and from that abstract, nature, urban and imaginative images arise. Gareth believes that whenever viewers purchase or comment on images, they connect with him. Often that connection is the breather he wants to provide, he’s touching people, reaching them with his images and that is what inspires him.

6th Place – Christina Brunton - “Beauty and the Beast”

Fifteen years ago I learnt how to paint and later I started photography as a way to capture images as a reference for my oil paintings, but work commitments made it hard to find the time to paint. The idea was to take photos of beautiful scenes I saw whilst travelling and later paint them once I had time. I never went back to my oil painting, as photography had taken over.

It wasn't until I discovered recently how photographs could be made into fine art that I was able to merge my passions of painting and photography. It has been a wonderful journey learning new skills and I never want to stop learning.

I am a photographer and digital artist living in Sydney, Australia. My art starts with a photo I have taken and then I enhance it digitally into fine art. Creating art for me is a meditation where I am so focused on the artistry that time stands still. Creating art is a way of life that sings to me and I hope it touches the viewer’s emotional strings, their heart and soul.

I have produced international award winning art and have been published regularly in various international magazines.

7th Place – Wayne Claypatch - “When a Man Comes Around”

I enjoy creating situations in my work by merging people, unique settings, toys, games, cartoons and old movies, all with my love for nostalgia. But beneath the whimsy on the surface, I am telling stories that have meaning for me. The thing I enjoy the most about exhibiting my work is hearing how people see themselves in certain pieces and find their own meanings. Oftentimes, people tell me what a painting or drawing of mine is about, and I'll appreciate their interpretation more than the one I had intended.

8th Place – Kathleen Smith - “Plume Rivalry”

I am a self-taught colored pencil artist. I reside in Keystone Heights, Florida on a small 55 acre ranch. I’m a wife, mother of four and grandmother of four. I enjoy using colored pencils and have a passion for trying new techniques with my pencils. Drawing portraits, wildlife and domestic animals are my favorite projects. I use a variety of colored pencils brands and use many different surfaces as support. My colored pencil pieces have been rendered on wood, paper, illustration boards and drafting film. Participating in county fairs has brought me several first place blue ribbons and Best of Show awards. I have been very fortunate to have my work published in The Strokes of Genius 9, The Best of Drawing “Creative Discoveries” a beautiful hardback art book. My work has also been published in colored pencil magazines. In August 2018 one of my pieces was featured on the cover of Ann Kulbergs COLOR MAGAZINE as well as a 5 page colored pencil tutorial. I am on administrative and moderator teams for two different social media colored pencil sites. Social media has been an excellent means of connecting colored pencil artists around the world. By exhibiting my artwork, I hope to enlighten people on using colored pencil as a fine art medium.

9th Place – Lisa Botto Lee - “A Mother's Love”

New Jersey-born and raised, Lisa Botto Lee is an American representational artist currently living and working in her South Florida studio overlooking the everglades. She is recognized for her portraiture, figurative and wildlife art and has achieved her own distinct style of narrative realism. Her mediums are oil, charcoal and graphite.

Born into a family of artists, Lee is the fifth generation, which traces its roots back to mural painters in Northern Italy. Lee is grateful to her parents for conveying to her this wonderful passion of art.

Lee has been the recipient of awards in national and international competitions. She has exhibited most notably with Allied Artists of America NYC; The Salmagundi Club NYC; Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club NYC; The National Arts Club in Gramercy Park NYC; 33 Contemporary Gallery, Artsy; Artelibre Gallery; Biennial National Exhibition, Punta Gorda FL; Gateway International, Artsy Shark, Art Impact International and Manhattan Arts International.

10th Place – Jeffrey Friedkin - “Sleepy Hollow Light”

Jeffrey Friedkin is a fine art and street photographer, specializing in capturing the energy, vibrancy and isolation of New York City. Jeffrey is a juried photography member of the prestigious Salmagundi Art Club in NYC. He is the Chairman of the Public Relations Committee and serves on the Salmagundi Board and Photography Committee.

A multiple award-winning photographer, Jeffrey has widely exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the tri-state area in addition to a large international online presence. His work has been featured in various magazines/news sites and is held in private collections and clubs. A series of his photographs have recently been acquired by the Yuko Nii permanent collection at the Williamsburg Art and Historical Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Jeffrey Friedkin’s photography employs a synthesis of the artistic eye and technology. His work focuses on New York life: the streets, people, architecture and nature. The lush rural landscapes and sparkling seascapes of the Hudson River Valley region equally inspire him. His images tell these stories.
