The Overall Winning Artists Category consists of the 10 Best Entries received from the 3 media categories of the Painting & Other Category, Photography & Digital Category and the 3 Dimensional Art categories. 

The winning artists will now be featured on the Light Space & Time website for the month of July 2019 and thereafter, the artworks and links to the artist’s websites will remain online in the Light Space & Time Archives.

The overall winning artists’ category of the "Primary Colors" Art Exhibition will receive extensive worldwide publicity and promotion.  In addition, the overall winning artists will also receive extensive worldwide publicity in the form of email marketing, 550+ press release announcements, event announcement posts and social media marketing.

1st Place – Sarah Miller - “Pride”

Digital artist, writer, and indie game designer, Sarah Miller creates in a world of her own existential fantasy. Based out of a small Virginia mountaintop in the eastern US, with her husband and two dogs, Sarah’s work dances between an array of subjects and styles, exploring fantasy, surrealism, and existential ideas through characters and visual storytelling. Her work has been described as dark and thought provoking, “beautiful and terrifying,” but to Sarah, her illustrations have always been merely an honest look at the darkness and beauty balanced inside our minds—painting by color the words she has often struggled to find for her own story.

Like many artists, Sarah found her eye for visual expression at an early age. Doodles and lifelike sketches brought her from gifted programs to advanced art courses throughout her school years, where she quickly honed the fundamentals and started creating her own characters. As her mind and interests grew, a love of fantasy, heroes, games, movies, and animation inspired much of her artistic development. By the end of high school, she was drawing posters and painting portraits, and after leaving with an academic award in visual arts, she already knew there was much more she wanted to learn.

Her undergraduate years took her studies from studio arts to game design and animation at the Art Institute of Washington. There she learned to bring her 2D illustrations to the next level, discovering creative software and finding immense satisfaction within digital arts. Coupled with her other passion for creative writing, she pursued a combination of storyboarding, scriptwriting, and other classes dedicated to telling stories through visual arts. After years of study between day jobs and relocating, Sarah earned her Bachelor of Individualized Study at George Mason University in Visual Design and Narrative.

Since her time at university, Sarah has built a professional portfolio through various freelance projects, worked as Creative Director for local businesses, and illustrated comics that help teach children and teens with autism. Now, thanks to a recent development from years of seed sowing and perseverance, Sarah focuses on her art full-time, immersing herself in her passion projects. Within the coming years, she hopes to self-publish two very distinct works: an indie tabletop RPG called "The Hunters,” which she has been creating alongside her husband/ creative partner, and a graphic novel of her own design that explores depression and mental illness, titled "Crow & Arrow.”

Much of Sarah’s creative career and adult life were inspired (and affected) by her personal path of self-discovery, and how few mental health resources there were available to figuring out the eccentricities of her own mind. After some late, life-changing diagnoses, she was inspired to discover that, who she is—who she had always been—as an artist was intertwined with those symptoms. Her art was, in itself, a result of the symptom, but also the cure. Through her art and story work, Sarah hopes to create awareness and generate discussion about mental health, encouraging viewers to find voices for themselves through her worlds and characters.

Though she got her start in pencil and inks, she now prefers painting digitally with her CINTIQ tablet, usually in Photoshop, Manga Studio, and other digital art software. There is also a sketchbook always within reach, where she sketches new composition ideas, writes plot points, and keeps track of her mind in organized chaos. Motivated by her fascination with philosophy, psychology, and existential themes, Sarah looks forward to the day where she can turn what she has learned into valuable inspiration and resources for others who are navigating their own existences, creating a community of previously silent voices now sharing in the awareness that they are less alone than they thought.

Sarah continues to showcase her work at conventions across the United States, with pieces in homes around the world, selling prints and taking on commissioned projects under the name Sarah Miller Creations. As her work and presence grows, she will continue to inspire voices, bridge connections, and tell stories through her art.

2nd Place – Carlos Bueno Vieira - “Chevy”

Carlos Bueno is a Miami based photographer originally from Brazil. Formally trained as a civil engineer, Bueno has been in touch with photography since the early age of 11 when his grandfather gave him a camera as a gift. By the age of 15, he had already built his own darkroom at home. During his college years, he developed an interest for industrial design and the influence of Bauhaus, which definitively was a significant element of inspiration in his work. His enthusiasm for the practice, lead him to be the one the founders of the Photo Club at the Pontíficia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro. Throughout his life as a professional, Carlos has gained tremendous experience in large construction projects, this has allowed him the opportunity to travel and live at remote countries. One constant in so many changes has been photography. Therefore, it is not a surprise that his work has developed into both technically and aesthetically pleasing pieces.

3rd Place – Anette Power - “Truxplorations”

Artist Biography: Award-winning artist Anette Power credits her mom, who also paints; and growing up on an island off the Swedish coast for providing a childhood full of creative exploration and a love for the outdoors.

This adventurous spirit brought Anette to the States and eventually finding work in Animation.  There she spent more than a decade fine-tuning her sense of light, color and setting a mood, working as a background painter for studios like Disney, Warner Bros., Cartoon Network and Universal.   Anette now dedicates her time to painting in Oils both outdoor and in her studio.

Artist Statement:  “I find myself drawn to subject matters with light and color that celebrate life's fleeting moments”, says Anette. "I enjoy painting on location immersing myself in the present and capturing a sense of our personal place in history. We each have a life story and whether I’m painting cars in Cuba, or light-filled moments of children or animals, I’m always struck by life’s fragility, the juxtaposition of beauty and joy interspersed with loss and challenges that exist in each of our lives. Art brings me more joy and I hope to share that with others.”

4th Place – Richard Mittelstadt - “Pinball Blues”

Having taught high school art with a Master’s degree, I have a diverse background in art materials and processes. As I worked on my college degrees in art education and studio art, I focused on drawing, printmaking and jewelry making. While teaching high school art, I concentrated on photography and landscape watercolor painting. After retiring, I turned my attention to acrylic painting. I really enjoy acrylic painting.

My ambition has always been to abstract my painting subjects. With acrylic paints, I can enthusiastically play with abstractionism—creating more colorful, expressive, and whimsical forms of landscapes as well as non-objective compositions.

I totally enjoy the magic that takes place during the painting process. As I immerse myself into each creative adventure, I often times find myself feeling transported into another dimension as if time no longer exists and my imagination and hands work to materialize a new image with color, line, texture, a sense of movement, balance, expression, and mood.

Having painted with acrylic paints for the past ten years, I am content with most of my final results. Every painting goes through a probation period during which I react to its visual impact. If the painting passes the visual test and achieved my personal goal, I sign it, seal it, and prepare it for public display. I think of my artwork as a theatrical production in which the viewer is allowed to temporarily suspend disbelief. For the viewer, my artwork becomes a momentary distraction—a gift of enchantment, amusement and emotional connection.

5th Place – Kathy S. Copsey - “A Beauty of Many Colors”

Kathy S. Copsey is a self-taught artist & has been a serious artist for over 30 years. Her focus is on pencil & digital drawings & acrylic & oil paintings, but she works with other mediums as well including computer graphics & minor video editing & production, and writing. As an artist, her purpose is to share, convey, & recreate the love & passion she feels, regardless of the subject matter she is working with. Through the creation of art, one is able to explore one’s passions, perhaps creating inspiration & the drive within others to strive for their own goals.

Always continually striving to learn and improve her craft, Kathy works with all kinds of subject matters, but her main specialty focuses on animals and nature. She has always loved animals since very young, and she loves being able to convey their spirits and souls thru her art. You can find Kathy’s artwork throughout Ventura and LA counties as well as online thru her website, online vendors, and social media, and she has had her artwork spread as far away as two Kung Fu schools in China. When she is not working on her art, you can generally find Kathy at The Village with Gus Gates enjoying her second love and passion of learning Kung Fu.

Kathy also provides a service called Art For Healing in which she will donate a piece of art to those in need of healing such as at a children’s hospital for every piece she sells. 6th Place – Chuck Jones - “Underscoring a Primary Conflict - Triptych”

Chuck Jones, a Tennessee-based artist, creates abstract works using graphite, ink, and acrylic on paper. The underlying theme of his paintings, irrespective of the presentation, derives from the appreciation that some human tensions can be articulated even if never fully resolved. In addition, there is something to be learned from reflectively opening ourselves to such unique expressions from one another.

Dr. Jones has no formal art training, beyond a couple workshops, but he has drawn and painted for 40 years. More centrally, despite having invested heavily in developing some facility in the world of words, first as a literature major and subsequently over many decades as a clinical psychologist, he has long recognized he would never be able to write the novel he wanted to read. By contrast, in the world of water media, he discovered that, by approaching his efforts with receptive curiosity, he could create images he wanted to view and patterns that, somehow, felt meaningful to him.

So far this year, Chuck Jones has been accepted into two national juried exhibitions, the first presented by the Arts and Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville and the second: Loss, Redemption, and Grace at EBD4 in Atlanta.

7th Place – Mary Schwindt - “Cadillac Ranch”

Photographer Mary Schwindt has been taking photographs since she was a college student. She has a degree from the University of New Mexico with an emphasis in photography. In her college student days, she shot with an old 35 mm camera and developed her own film and prints. These days she works strictly in digital, using mostly her Samsung Galaxy phone. After graduating from college, Mary decided that photography wouldn’t pay the bills, so she got a degree in Construction Project Management and spent many years as a Project Manager and General Contractor in New Mexico and Arizona. It wasn’t until retiring that she was finally able to devote more time to her photography.

Until recently, Mary lived in the American Southwest, residing in New Mexico, Colorado, and Arizona. Mary’s husband is a landscape painter, a talented professional artist that has greatly influenced and encouraged her. The two of them moved to the Austin, Texas area in 2015. She has traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad. She loves landscapes and nature, which is reflected in her subject matter. Most of her photographs come from places she’s traveled, including the Southwest, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, France, Spain, Morocco, and Italy. Her work has been shown at the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe and in several juried shows in the Austin area. She is a member of the Austin area Creative Arts Society (CAS) and Artists of Central Texas (ACT).

8th Place – Maria Gedroc - “Red Canopy”

Maria Gedroc is an artist, designer and art educator who has been in more than 125 art shows and galleries, including the Dancing Krow in the Oak Park Harrison Arts District, Chicago Public Library, and Ferguson Art Gallery at Concordia University Chicago. Her artwork is included in the Chicago Art Scene by Crow Wood Publishing and Motif, a creative arts journal. Ms. Gedroc received her Master’s degree from The School of Art Institute of Chicago and currently is an administrator and adjunct professor at Concordia University Chicago, IL.

9th Place – Jyl Blackwell - “Emblazon”

Jyl's art sprang from a love of science and technology. It wasn’t until recent advances in software that she was able to form art and science into a process called Kinetic Flow Painting™. Kinetic is defined as relating to or resulting from motion. (of a work of art) depending on movement for its effect. And that movement is created by the flow of the pixels. Swirling layers of gradient pixels are put into motion on the digital canvas. Often inspired by nature, dance and the human form, Jyl brings the abstract to real-life experiences and observations.

An award winning and published artist, Jyl Blackwell has been creating art and music since her childhood. She has early beginnings as a pencil and charcoal artist as well as dabbling in pastels and watercolor. When she wasn’t creating works of art, she was singing and dancing on stage. Using various software, she combines the best attributes of each to lay down riffs of color and curve, form and light – music for the eyes!

10th Place – Karen Sirnick - “Bathing Beauty”

Karen Sirnick is predominantly a self-taught photographer who lives and creates in Ponte Vedra, FL. She shares her home with her husband and a beloved rescue dog, Andy. As a child growing up in a family of 13, their vacations were mainly centered around camping and other outdoor activities. As a newlywed, Karen and her husband, Paul, spent many of their vacations backpacking and camping in West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. She continues to possess a deep love of nature and this subject has been a major influence in her photographic choices. Karen is currently retired and, although no longer backpacking, continues her passion for travel and photographing her journey.

In an effort to enhance her photographic skills Karen continues to take classes, attend photography workshops, and submits her work into juried exhibits and competitions both locally and internationally. The continuing education has provided a variety of assignments, introduction to new software, exposure to a diversity of professional photographers, and invaluable photographic critique.

Karen continues to explore new ideas and techniques in pursuit of creating beautiful and interesting images. Her work has been accepted and shown in a number of juried exhibitions in the Southeast Florida area. She has received a number of awards for her work including Light, Space, & Time’s Online Gallery.
