Artist Biography:
International award winning artist, Sandy Moser, has always been interested in painting and drawing nature and animals. She drew as a child and began painting in oils as a teenager. When she was in high school, art instructor Ron Goodwin saw her talent and allowed her to take oil painting classes in the adult education program. It was a decision to go to Nova Scotia Teachers College instead of art college that lead her to a twenty year career as an English and art teacher in junior and senior high school in Sheet Harbour, Nova.
Raising three children and having a full time career, she painted sporadically. Sandy retired from teaching due to an illness so she began to paint again.
She is basically a self-taught artist, but has taken many workshops in the past 15 years. She has taken watercolor workshops from world renowned painters Zoltan Szabo and Cheng- Khee Chee. She has studied wildlife art through a twelve month course from North Light Art School. She has also studied with landscape artists Tom Forrestal and Peter Gough, silk painter Holly Carr, and has attended many workshops in watercolors, egg tempera and acrylics. Sandy has also studied wildlife art from Lloyd Pretty, Ron Decker and Derek Wicks.
Her recent realistic paintings of wildlife are painted in acrylics with many glazes, but she also paints animals in gouache, pastels, scratchboard, and watercolor, as well as sketching in graphite and ink.
The beauty of Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada has been the inspiration for many of Sandy’s seacapes, landscapes and wildlife paintings. The ocean and lakes provide her with many images to paint. Taylor Head Park and Sober Island Headland are special places where she likes to hike and photograph images that are used for references for her paintings.
Since living along the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, she has had the opportunity to study and photograph many species of birds, in particular the common loon, with her husband Robert. They photograph the loons from their canoe. She says, “It is so awesome to be able to paddle alongside a mother loon and watch her feed her babies and teach them how to dive. These are the things I want to capture in a painting, a moment in time; a gaze of an eye, a particular stance, or a realistic look of an animal or bird”.
Sandy has been painting endangered species for several years, as well as animals that are indigenous to Canada. She says “I feel compelled to paint endangered species. This may show the importance of looking after our environment which in turn may help to save the habitats of these endangered species.”
Sandy has won over 60 international awards, of which four have been “Best of Show”. Many of her paintings have been featured in various newspapers, websites and publications. Her work has been shown on the following online galleries – Still Point Gallery, My Art Contest, Light, Space & Time Gallery, Raebec Gallery, Richeson Gallery and Leading Artists Gallery.
Several of her paintings have been published in two of the Richeson 75 Animals, Birds, and Wildlife books. In May, 2014, Sandy was a featured artist in the Visual Language Magazine. In February 2015 her painting “Friends of Taylor Head” was published the in the book AcrylicWorks2 –Radical Breakthroughs. Also, in 2016 she was a featured artist in the Truro Daily News regarding the “Fins, Fur and Feathers Show” at Visual Voice Gallery in Truro. Two of her paintings of the Eastern Shore are part of the collection at Province House in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Sandy’s work has been featured in many selected group shows within the province of Nova Scotia and she continues to show her work at various shops and galleries. She is currently a member and founding president of the Seacoast Trail Arts Association and is a member of Visual Arts of Nova Scotia. Sandy’s paintings are now in private collections in many parts of Canada, the United States, New Zealand and Europe.
Artist Statement:
Painting is entirely for my pleasure and fulfillment. I am driven to create images on canvas and paper. It is something that I cannot stop. It is like breathing – it is a required part of my existence. It’s who I am and it’s part of my soul. To be able to create a story, an action, an image, is a wonderful passion to have. When the brush goes into my hand, something takes over and I am lost in the creative process.
Through my paintings, I want the viewer to be able to appreciate the scenery and habitat and the beauty of these creatures. Perhaps then, they will understand how important it is that each of us must do our part to try to preserve the environment especially for their habitat. I believe that each individual has a responsibility to co-exist on this planet in a way that respects and protects wildlife and their surroundings. Being a wildlife artist allows me to give back and donate money, prints and original paintings to various causes, in particular “Hope For Wildlife” and “The Nova Scotia Nature Trust”.
