Artist Biography

Sandy Moser is an international, award winning artist who is inspired to paint the wild creatures of the world. She is a self-taught artist and has taken many workshops over her art career. She has attended many workshops in watercolors, egg tempera and acrylics. Sandy has also studied wildlife art with Canadian artists Ron Decker and Derek Wicks. Her recent realistic paintings of wildlife are painted in acrylics with many glazes, but she also paints animals in gouache, pastels, scratchboard, and watercolor.

The beauty of Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada has been the inspiration for many of Sandy’s seacapes, landscapes and wildlife paintings. The ocean and lakes provide her with many images from which to paint. Since living along the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, she has had the opportunity to study and photograph many species of birds, inparticular, the common loon. Sandy has been painting endangered species for several years, as well as animals that are indigenous to Canada.

Sandy has won over 60 international awards, of which six have been “Best of Show”. Her latest accolade was in January 2019 when her painting “Momma’s Treasures” won first place in the “Animals” Art Exhibition for the Contemporary Art Room Online Gallery. Several of her paintings have been published in two of the Richeson 75 Animals, Birds, and Wildlife books and, also in the book AcrylicWorks2 –Radical Breakthroughs. Sandy was also a featured artist in the Visual Language Magazine. Also, in 2015 she was a featured artist in the Truro Daily News regarding the “Fins, Fur and Feathers Show” at Visual Voice Gallery in Truro.

Artist Statement

Painting is entirely for my pleasure and fulfillment. I am driven to create images on canvas and paper. It is something that I cannot stop. It is like breathing – it is a required part of my existence. It’s who I am and its part of my soul. To be able to create a story, an action, an image, is a wonderful passion to have. When the brush goes into my hand, something takes over and I am lost in the creative process.

I hope that my realistic style captures the essence of the animals and birds that I paint. The dominant theme in my paintings is the relationship between the environment and the animal and the bond between mother and baby. Raising babies in the wild is a challenging job. The young ones of any species face a tenuous existence and realistically may not live out the year.

Through my paintings, I want the viewer to be able to appreciate the scenery and habitat and the beauty of these creatures. Perhaps then, they will understand how important it is that each of us must do our part to try to preserve the environment especially for their habitat. I believe that each individual has a responsibility to co-exist on this planet in a way that respects and protects wildlife and their surroundings. If we don’t protect our lands, our waters and our animals and birds, then who will?
